Paul Giamatti To Play The Rhino In 'Amazing Spider-Man 2?'
Just when you though Hollywood was out of surprises, a rather interesting development has cropped up regarding Marc Webb's 'Amazing Spider-Man 2.' We already know that Jamie Foxx will be playing the principal villain Electro, but now it appears our antagonist may get some backup from a very unexpected source. Paul Giamatti ('John Dies at the End') is in talks to play The Rhino in the upcoming sequel. The Rhino is a character who began life as a professional criminal, but passed over into supervillain territory when he came into possession of a polymer suit that made him nearly impervious to physical harm. It also imbued him with super speed. In addition to this news, reports are coming in that Felicity Jones ('Like Crazy') is also in negotiations for an unspecified role. Giamatti has evidently been a fan of the character for a long time. Here's what he said in a 2011 interview...
"I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit, and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies.’ But maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. … If they ever go with The Rhino, I would be ready and waiting.”
I could not be happier for Giamatti. Not only is he a fantastic actor who is finally getting the opportunity to appear in a blockbuster comic book movie, but he's also getting the chance to play a comic book character he's been a fan of since childhood. Physically, Giamatti may seem an odd choice for Rhino, but there are mitigating factors to consider here. First, Rhino, as a character, is really about the suit, and it wouldn't take long for Giamatti to get into shape enough to wear the Rhino suit. Also, if The Lizard in 'Amazing Spider-Man' is any indication, there will probably be no small amount of digital enhancement utilized. I'm not advocating such things, but it'll most likely be present. My only concern, as it usually is when multiple villains are announced for a superhero movie, is how 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' will balance its bad guys. More than likely, and here's where we get into possible bizarro world territory, Jamie Foxx will be the lead baddie and Paul Giamatti will play the goon henchmen. Given Marc Webb's breakout with '500 Days of Summer,' I'm not surprised he's looking at more indie performers like Giamatti and Jones, but I am happy that the studio is allowing him to make bold choices with his casting.

I think this choice fits right in with hiring Marc Webb to direct the movie and the decision to reboot the franchise. I think they'll work the second villain in by having Rhino be a teacher at Peter's school and teaches Gwen Stacy biology class while also working nights as an electrician for Jamie Foxx.

also iI think a more cybernetic mech-esque type of suit for Rhino would be cool. Cause unlike the Goblin it would make sense and be more apropriate for film. Even though iI feel like these Spidey movies should open like a Bond film. Start with Spiderman fighting a villian/s that we wanna see but couldnt hold an entire movie.

I know im like the only one but I actually liked Amazing Spiderman. Perfect? Fuuck no! But it was a decent Spidey movie and I enjoyed Garfields Parker performance. Yes its modernized but so was he in Ultimate and that whole run is almost all amazing with small speedbumps. WTF Peter is skateboarding?!!? Who the fuck cares. Hated Lizard facial structure and the whole "neighborhood helping Spidey, which apparently has got to be in every one, was stupid. But Im interested in this news and excited to see if Webb gets the mark closer.

As much as I'm excited for this one (despite not being in the MCU) I just don't see how the Rhino will work in film, but hey let's see what happens. As for the unspecified role for Felicity Jones...seriously...is there any point in hiding it. I think we all know who she's in talks to play.

well in the ultimate universe rhine was a guy like giamatti in a mechanical rhino suit, it was no less imposing. Also I'm referring to the comic not the horrible tv show, also ultimate rhino was shown VERY little in the comic so there's plenty of room to grow on that version, and paul giamatti's a great actor could be superior to foxx' electro if you ask me ( always disliked electro as a villain))
