It has officially been confirmed, the long trek is over and the rumor wars can cease. J.J. Abrams is directing 'Star Wars Episode VII.' The man now holds the keys to both of the two biggest sci-fi franchises, though one can imagine someone else will probably have to take over the next 'Star Trek.' He has apparently already been locked to produce the next installment after 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' All this being said, we have not rid ourselves of all uncertainties regarding the new 'Star Wars' films. Not only do we have no locked-down cast, but things that were concrete from day one are now seemingly up in the air. Specifically, the long-established 2015 release date has become questionable. Sources say Abrams has not committed to that date and it may change if the development process requires it.
So first and foremost, there is no longer any doubt, Abrams is our guy. Well, I should say there is no longer any doubt that he is Disney's selection for the job. Though I'm thrilled at his hiring, I'm sure there will be no end to the debate over whether he is the right choice until, and even beyond, the film's release. Which brings us to the other looming situation here: will we see 'Episode VII' in 2015. To be honest, my first reaction upon hearing Disney/Lucasfilm's proposed release date was that it seemed like they weren't giving themselves too terribly much time to restart the franchise, especially with none of the elements in place at the time. While there is a sense of disappointment that 'Episode VII' could be delayed, I'd much rather Abrams be afforded the opportunity to take his time and craft something really excellent to jump-start 'Star Wars.' After suffering through the prequels, would we really want something rushed and not fully realized? This does obviously take a major feather out of the cap of 2015's release slate, but that was to be expected with such a forecast.
What do you guys think? Disappointed 'Episode VII' may be pushed back? Do you think developing a quality product trumps holding to the predesignated release date? Now that Abrams is confirmed, any further thoughts on his selection?

Comment by Stu on January 30, 2013 at 2:36pm Was watching A New Hope last night for the first time in years and couldn't help pondering the look and feel of the new films. Surely they can get these new films right! The prequels have given everyone a blueprint for better or worse and I just hope that the damn mouse doesn't crack the whip and force a rushed product.
As well as potentially making the film better, a delayed release date makes for more anticipation which is also exciting. Hell, I had more fun looking forward to The Lost World - Jurassic Park than actually watching it.
Comment by Neg Primer on January 30, 2013 at 1:02am Joe...try reading any of the Timothy Zahn books. They bear little similarity with anything else in Star Wars lore, other than what has tried to borrow ideas from them. The Thrawn Trilogy would make for an incredible series of movies.
Comment by Joe Cool on January 29, 2013 at 8:38pm I hope they don't touch a darn thing about the EU. I can't stand ANY of it. Most of it just silly and unable to avoid reusing the same ideas and characters with different names.
Comment by Ron Grijs on January 29, 2013 at 11:06am This is a saga for the next generation. I'm perfectly fine with it being delayed.
Comment by Neg Primer on January 29, 2013 at 2:53am The release of this will be interesting...not just to see if it's any good and washes the stink of the prequels out of our mouths, but also to see how they regard the EU. The books extend 40 years after the movies, and a series of comics picks up around 100 years after the movies.
If this movie follows an original story and picks up, say, 20 years after the movies, then there's a conflict with the EU. I'm completely ok with this. Frankly, the EU has gone absolutely crazy since the New Jedi Order...which takes place around 21-25 years after the movies. Almost every book since then has been a little nutty.
Comment by Joe Cool on January 28, 2013 at 11:16pm I agree with the author, release date not important, quality is! Star Wars is perhaps the most beloved franchise in film history and it's already taken a serious blow due to those prequels, anything less could be the final nail in the coffin. Treat it respect, people love this!
However, I've got to admit that despite all my original excitement about Star Wars falling into the hands of Disney (because, though George Lucas may have created it, he clearly lost the touch for it and was always a crappy director anyway) and my further excitement the J.J. Abrams was selected to direct (the best possible choice in my opinion), I'm starting to wonder if this is really a good idea at all and if perhaps we should have learned from the prequels that Star Wars is best left alone and that it's success may only have been something that could be accomplished at the time the original were made?
But then that's why my faith is in J.J. Abrams, he took what is absolutely a franchise from another era (no matter how beloved, or contemporary spin-offs have been made or such) and through his unique skill kept it absolutely faithful to the original yet completely refreshed it for a newer, younger generation! That of course is "Star Trek". After watching in "Super 8" the spirit he has to capture the feel of 80's era films, I have no doubt this is the man who can redeem "Star Wars" name from the prequels and more, bring it back to its original form and glory AND inject new youth into it.
Comment by Eric Turpel on January 28, 2013 at 7:21pm I think pushing it back is a good thing. Something like a new Star Wars should take time for it, otherwise it'll be a rushed mess.
Comment by ShadowNeverDies on January 28, 2013 at 7:04pm @SidMeister: Lots of money lol, and maybe just because they asked. Maybe the quote was so they wouldn't ask him, but once they did as a fan he basically had to say yes. But yeah they probably offered him a ridiculous amount of cash. That Disney money. And yeah I'm guessing a script might not have been ready but the overall plot was probably revealed to him.
Comment by SidMeister on January 28, 2013 at 5:25pm STAR WARS is a huge undertaking even for JJ. I'de rather he take his time to make somethingexcellent than rush it a deliver something mediocre or even decent. After all those shitty prequels we need something GOOD. But here's the question no one is asking: What is it that made J.J. Abrams accept the job after all? and was there even some sort of script presented to him at all?
Comment by Yusuf on January 28, 2013 at 5:23pm I can't wait for episode 0 and - I and - II
