Schwarzenegger Will Return For 'Terminator 5'

Much like its titular robot hitman, 'The Terminator' franchise has proven near impossible to kill. McG sure tried to destroy it with 'Terminator: Salvation,' as did a rights issue just a few months ago. However, Megan Ellison has been rather determined to get a new movie produced; scaring up over $20 million for the rights. Then just last week, she and her brother David hired Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis to write 'Terminator 5.' And now, a figure from franchise past appears to be returning. While promoting his latest film 'The Last Stand,' Arnold Schwarzenegger began listing for the attending press all of his upcoming projects, and 'Terminator 5' found its way onto that list. It is not certain whether Arnold would occupy a major role in the film or something more akin to a cameo. This is not the only franchise to which Arnie is scheduled to return. On that same list were projects like 'Triplets' and the new Conan movie.

Here is a situation wherein reason must trump fandom. The immediate reaction to this news would be to rejoice at the return of the original cybernetic assassin. However, let's assume for a moment that Arnold will be playing the lead role, the guy is beyond too old to lead an action-heavy sci-fi flick. As much as I was looking forward to 'The Last Stand,' it was clear from the fact that a majority of his stunts were based around sitting in a car or moving somewhat quickly from one place to another during a firefight that he has lost a step or two in his old age. Not even with a cadre of stunt doubles do I see how he could possibly manage the physical demands of a film like this. Even if his T-101 would only make a cameo, these are robots for crying out loud. They don't age! So seeing Arnie's wrinkled visage as T-101 even for a moment would make absolutely no sense. My guess is that it'll be more like his cameo in 'The Rundown;' a brief glimpse of him as a background character in a sort of passing of the torch moment. Anything more than that I feel is categorically unwise. Their only other option would be to pursue the same CG approach that allowed for the brief reappearance of Arnold's T-101 in 'Terminator Salvation,' but I can't imagine the audience having to endure that for an entire film.

What do you guys think? Is Arnold's return a good thing for the franchise or a desperation move? Do you think he will have a major role?

I disagree greatly, McG's "Terminator Salvation" will never become a classic like T1 and T2, but it was a good film and greatly expanded the vision and world of "The Terminator". I don't see how it could've been any better lacking Arnold Schwarzenneger, Michael Biehn, or Linda Hamilton themselves.

They should have just stopped after T2.

CG that b*tch up, I've had to endure decades now of lousy, scene stealing CG from blockbusters, might as well use it to a worthy cause, looks fake anyway !!......hell  Rotoscope Ahnuld like Scanner Darkly and have Roland Kickinger steppin in like a obvious stunt double like a fight scene from an episode of Simon and Simon, don't bother to match the costume or hairstyle exactly. .......but I concur a gnarled old bitter Conan would be cool.

I cant see him having a major role because of the story. maybe if they do they bit that was mentioned in T3 about how his model became close with John, which is why (spoiler) he killed him. but i dont think a whole movie should just be a build up to that

I think that Arnie should be a major role in the film, but not the lead, and also, not even a Cybernetic organism, he should be Arnie, and his character has a past of being an ultimate badass, and that badass was the bassist of what the Cyberdign Killer Machine company thought up for the T - 800. And John Conner and him and the real Terminator team up and take down robots. Take that  concept but make it more cool and serious.

Maybe he'll just be playing the guy that Skynet used as a basis for T-101, but 30 years beyond the point of whatever Skynet did with him obviously.

Well you could do it this way, the reason for the human disguises is to blend in with other humans, looking older would be beneficiary for the robots since humans would be looking for a more youthful and athletic person who can obviously be a cyborg. They wouldn't suspect the old guy so the premise can still work, just that they will be using the same actor again but serving a different purpose.

Get him to mo-cap and do all the direlogue for it then get Weta to do him CG to the standard of Gollum or The White Orc and have it set in the Future Wars.

But honestly I couldn't reall give a fuck!

Old King Conan on the other Hand...

Hell Yes!

;)

I think it would be interesting to see him as a resistance fighter in the new post apocalyptic world, facing the rubber-faced T-600s with a young John Connor. And somewhere at the end he gets captured or something, being the model for the T-800s. If they want to ignore the continuity of Terminator Salvation, they could just say its an interquel.
