In one of the stranger, but more promising, stories of the week, it looks like two formidable names in Hollywood will be teaming up for a new project. Ron Howard ('Apollo 13,' 'A Beautiful Mind') is set to direct an American, big screen version of a 2003 Israeli TV movie called 'Kol Ma She'Yesh Li.' In English, the title translates to 'All I Got.' The new version will be released by Paramount with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot producing. 'All I Got,' originally directed by screenwriter Margalit Keren, is said to be a cross between 'The Notebook,' and Albert Brooks' 'Defending Your Life.' Keren also wrote the successful Israeli series Be’Tipul, the series that became 'In Treatment' when exported to HBO. No word yet on when production is set to begin.

I'm not sure which part of this story jumps out first. On the one hand, this is a hell of a collaboration. J.J. Abrams' stock continues to rise both as a director (with the new 'Star Trek' franchise) and as a producer (the 'Mission: Impossible' films and a host of TV projects). His teaming with a great director like Ron Howard is a pretty fantastic enterprise. People like to point at 'The Da Vinci Code'/'Angels and Demons' as evidence that Howard has lost his touch, but I emphatically disagree. It's simply a matter of landing the right project. In addition to 'All I Got,' which conceptually seems quite appealing, I'm thoroughly looking forward to his Formula 1 drama 'Rush' with Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde. The other interesting facet of this project is that Paramount went out of its way to find source material to adapt here. Despite the success HBO has enjoyed converting Keren's TV shows in the past, adapting an Israeli TV movie into an American feature is far from a safe bet. Granted, Howard and Abrams comprise a powerhouse team to put behind 'All I Got, ' and should pique the interest of those who haven't heard of the TV movie (which is to say most people). Whatever the outcome, I gotta tip my hat to Paramount for taking a chance on this one.
