Time To Take Another Dip In The 'Hot Tub Time Machine?'
For a studio that was bankrupt just a couple years ago, MGM sure is busy these days. Their remake of 'Carrie,' one of a slew of remakes they've got in the works, will be released in a couple of months, they've just announced a new version of 'Ben-Hur,' and now it looks like the studio is toying with the idea of a sequel to one of their more recent comedies. MGM is talking about drawing up plans for a sequel to 'Hot Tub Time Machine.' They are currently in exploratory talks with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke to reprise their roles from the first film; at this time, John Cusack is not involved. Steve Pink, who directed the first 'Hot Tub Time Machine,' could return to helm the sequel and might even pen the script with Corddry. For those who missed the 2010 original, 'HTTM' centered on three middle-aged guys who are sent back to their youth in the 1980s by way of a malfunctioning jacuzzi. They are joined by one guy's young nephew. The sequel is still in very early talks, but could be fast-tracked if it holds up.
I am cautiously optimistic about this. True, comedy sequels are a difficult landscape to traverse, and so many have failed. The best comedy sequel for my money is still 'Airplane II.' However, I really dug 'Hot Tub Time Machine,' and I could definitely see myself enjoying another shenanigan-filled adventure with those characters. What really sold me on the film was the half-sardonic/half-reverent manner in which they approached the 1980s. So many of the movie's best jokes are nods to the decade that alternate between, "remember how silly the 80s were" and "dude, remember how awesome the 80s were!" The question I would have, script-wise, is whether they would be going back to the 80s again or perhaps they would give the 90s the same treatment. My hope is the former. I hate to say it, because I like the guy, but it really shouldn't be too hard to get Cusack back. I mean, it's not as if he's busy working on that 'Raven' sequel. Once again, this project is in the very early stages of development so it could still fall apart.
What do you guys think? Would you be interested in a 'Hot Tub Time Machine' sequel? Where do you think the temporal jacuz-cruise should take our heroes this time?

HTTM was a hilarious movie but I don't know if you can catch that lightning in a bottle a second time. Even if you get the characters back it's the story that needs to be as great as the first and sequels fail more than they succeed at the task. Maybe if they were doing something completely different than time traveling but had similar impact, then maybe. That might be what Cusack is holding out for.

Listen, we're long overdue for another comedy time travel series and I thought HTTM was the best since Back to the Future. HTTM had a lot of nods to that series while still doing a good job of being its own. The possibilities for a HTTM sequel to either follow in the path of BTTF or to carve its own niche are exciting to me. I'm pretty positive on this news.

I always thought Chevy Chase's character was completely pointless in the first film. Seriously, if you edit him out, literally nothing changes.

I remember the director once saying if they did a sequel it would focus on the Cincinnati incident referenced in the "Cincinnati Shoebox" in John Cusack's closet
