If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Nick Herring posted a statusBy now every Film Critics Association in the country has printed their list and the Golden Globes and Oscars are poised to tell us what were the best movies, actors, etc. 2012. Yet none of these filings breaks down who was the Biggest Star of the year. Who was Hollywood’s ‘It Girl’ of 2012?
Remember back when you’d never heard of Jessica Chastain, then suddenly last year when she seemed to have a movie on the marquee every time you went to the Cineplex? Not just bit parts in rom-coms or genre flicks, but starring in high profile Oscar-bait like THE HELP, TAKE SHELTER, THE DEBT, TREE OF LIFE etc.
Funny thing is that most of the time ‘It Girl’ isn’t even a girl. In previous years it was Ryan Reynolds (THE PROPOSAL, BURIED, GREEN LANTERN, THE CHANGE-UP), Colin Ferrell (PHONE BOOTH, THE RECRUIT, DAREDEVIL, S.W.A.T.), Jude Law (I HEART HUCKABEES, SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, ALFIE, CLOSER, THE AVIATOR)…and every year it threatens to be Samuel L. Jackson. Hell, before that it was Michael Caine.
So, who were the contenders for 2012?
Mark Duplass
The indie/mumblecore director seems like the unlikeliest of choices yet he jumped out early in the year starring several movies (YOUR SISTER’S SISTER, DARLING COMPANION, SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED and a cameo in ZERO DARK THIRTY), some released in the same month. All of this plus his role in the FX TV series “The League”.
Matthew McConaghey
This was the year Matthew McConaghey woke everybody up and reminded us that he can be a great actor by starring in (or nearly stealing) four of the best reviewed movies of the year (BERNIE, THE PAPERBOY, MAGIC MIKE, KILLER JOE).
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Kid’s come a loooong way from “Third Rock from The Sun”. Once summer kicked off JG-L found himself in a slew of high profile films (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, LOOPER, PREMIUM RUSH, LINCOLN) that would make any young fanboy green with envy.
And the winner is…
Actually there was one more candidate who managed to be prominently featured in no less than FIVE #1 movies this year (BRAVE, THE HOBBIT, SNOW WHITE & the HUNTSMAN, THE AVENGERS, THE HUNGER GAMES), as well as two hit TV series!
Any guesses?
…
That’s right, the winner is
...the Arrow!
I suppose it was due, but maybe for the first time since the Middle Ages it’s a great time to be an archer.
“Uh, say what?”

Comment by Neg Primer on January 14, 2013 at 3:30am Crossbow ammo is referred to as a bolt or a quarrel, not arrows.
Also, is The Arrow really a hit show? It's the best unintentional comedy of the fall!
Comment by kyoshira71 on January 13, 2013 at 12:25pm Great job on the article Leon.
Comment by King of the Koopas on January 11, 2013 at 5:48pm 2012 made me gay for Matthew Mcconaughey. Killer Joe was just incredible.

Comment by MahMahAfro on January 11, 2013 at 4:19pm This article confused me in about 3000 different ways...
Who is Jessica Chatlain? What's a Duplass? Since when was Matthew McConaghey anything other than a fucking annoying douchebag? How come I agree JGL deserves this credit yet cannot think of anything this year that I thought he was great in? Why are we giving awards to inanimate objects now? Where is the inanimate carbon rod from The Simpsons?
I do agree however that an 'It Girl' is the perfect way to describe Ryan Reynolds. Same goes for Ryan Gosling if ya ask me. Fuckin Ryans...
Comment by LunaticLMD on January 11, 2013 at 4:18pm It was a good year for the Arrow and I see it riding its success into video games with Tomb Raider.
Very nice Leon.
Comment by RogueLatina on January 11, 2013 at 3:39pm Ha! I was waiting for the punchline and refused to scroll down. Yes, you are correct The Arrow wins hands down.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on January 11, 2013 at 3:30pm EXACTLY, Leon! :)
Comment by Omegashrimp on January 11, 2013 at 3:23pm JG-L was the first person that came to mind for me this year. Nice list.
