One of the things that most interests me about Steven Spielberg is how he freely he alternates between moving, pensive dramas and epic sci-fi or adventure. Now that 'Lincoln' is in the books, Spielberg's next project was slated to be the giant sci-fi actioner 'Robopocalypse.' Based on the novel by Daniel H. Wilson, and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, the story centers on the robot uprising that threatens the survival of the human race. However, it now appears that, much like the Mayan situation, this apocalypse may have to be postponed. Though it was set to begin shooting this spring, Spielberg has put the project on indefinite hold. A spokesperson for Spielberg stated that the script wasn't ready and that it is currently too expensive to produce. Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway were in discussion to star in the film.
I'm a bit torn on this. On the one hand, I am severely disappointed that 'Robopocalypse' isn't going into immediate production. I'm a sucker for apocalyptic films, and I'm also terrified of robot uprisings. What? It could happen. This film sounded perfect for me. Not only that, but Drew Goddard so blew me away on 'Cabin in the Woods' that I was thrilled to see what he did with this script. However, I must say I admire the restraint Spielberg is showing by not rushing into something that isn't fully developed. I would hate for a movie with this scale to end up being as sloppy and incomprehensible as...a lot of the giant-scale sci-fi blockbusters we get every summer. I do find it a little strange that the spokesperson mentioned that the current iteration of the project is too expensive to produce. How much money could it really cost that a Disney/Dreamworks/Fox co-production couldn't find the cash for a Spielberg film? Then again, throwing money at blockbusters in the past hasn't exactly been a surefire tactic for ensuring quality. I just hope this doesn't mean that by the time Spielberg is ready to make 'Robopocalypse' that Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway are still available.
What do you guys think? Disappointed 'Robopocalypse' is being delayed? How possible do you think it is that the movie will actually be cancelled? What should Spielberg take on in the meantime?

Comment by Brandon Blaze on January 13, 2013 at 6:06pm Haven't finished reading the book yet as far as an anticipation factor, but still, this is unfortunate. Sci-Fi movies are on the major upswing. from the last few years to now and the next few years, so many coming out are of a respectable production cost/value, not to mention superhero movies, so I'm fine with as many coming out as possible. Sci-Fi have always been the underdogs, genre movies in general. even today, despite how many people love them, they still aren't considered on the level of "Drama" Academy Awards focuses on, especially when there's so much thought and concept designs going into it (e.g Tron Legacy) to put you into that world. With Speilberg behind this, no doubt it'd be a part of the Academy Awards that year.
Being put on hold is only good not to rush into things and mess it up, other than that i'm ready for it -- just wish Daniel would have called this 'Robocalypse' since the 'robopoc' part doesn't roll off the tongue right... might need a title-change for the screen...

Comment by HudsonsirhesHicks on January 10, 2013 at 7:01pm "it is currently too expensive to produce" - does he think if he waits a few years it will suddenly get cheaper?
Comment by TheGoose on January 10, 2013 at 3:30pm Nothing to add; whoever wrote this completely read my mind; especially about the financing aspect, that seems quite odd about big sci-fi studio backed movie being directed by Spielberg.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on January 10, 2013 at 3:29pm I'm going to guess the theme of 2013, "Apocalypse films that studios couldn't get out in time for 2012..."
