Comment by BLU Year on December 29, 2012 at 10:35pm BTW, blacks do appear in some scenes at the beginning of the movie. During the planning of the battle and some scenes of the initial invasion.
Comment by BLU Year on December 29, 2012 at 10:34pm In other words. No black man raised or was present during the hoisting of the flag. End of story. Also, it's based on the book of the same name.

The point of Flags of our Fathers was to show the story of the men that raised the flag. It wasn't about the units or companies that were present. Same focus was with Letters from Iwo Jima. It was to cover the japanese side of the conflict in that particular battle. Could Eastwood have put in a black extra on the side? Sure, but I don't see how that would affect the movie one way or another. You're just calling out raceism where there jsut ins't any. Lee is reactionanry to most of his comments and news. He isn't a good person from what I've read, particularly when he thinks he seems to be on the right on something that demands more research (not seeing Django; his comments towards Eastwood.) It's all about context. Stop ignoring context.
Comment by Justin V. on December 29, 2012 at 4:36pm So glad I came across this call-in show just in time to hear that out of context and jumbled rant about Django and Walking Dead.
Comment by MR CHOCOLATE BAR on December 29, 2012 at 3:53pm By the way, the racial revenge fantasy is not new and whites shouldn't get upset if a black person makes one because black people had to sit through death wish and Dirty Harry movies, both of which in my opinion are white fantasy revenge movies on black people. In fact, Hollywood is full of racial revenge fantasy on blacks. They typically feature some white man with a gun killing off black 'criminals' ( I GUESS THEY THINK THAT MAKES IT ACCEPTABLE) and they throw in a few whites and Hispanics so it doesn't seem racist. The insult is that ( relating to the Eastwood movie) they usually don't give black folks any roles until it is time for 'street thug #12 or rapist #2. When it is time for criminal characters, they got plenty of roles for blacks.
Comment by MR CHOCOLATE BAR on December 29, 2012 at 3:47pm It's as insulting as when whites make movies portraying ancient Egyptians as white. Just don't want to give a black man credit for anything.
Comment by MR CHOCOLATE BAR on December 29, 2012 at 3:44pm Spike lee does these kind of activist movies so why would you expect him not to have an activist flavored response to questions he is asked.
There were nearly 1000 black soldiers who fought at Iwo Jima and East wood didn't show a single black face. Many of these black soldiers received metals of honor and Eastwood didn't show one black face. Eastwood's response was that , as he understands it, there were only whites but Eastwood is wrong. I think Pat Bucannan the racist said something similar when he said that 100 percent of the people who fought in the war or in particular battles were white. As a black person I am offended that they discount the contribution of blacks when blacks had enough love for America to fight for it even though America was treating them like garbage. Many of these blacks were prevented from serving until America desperately needed more troops. It's a slap in the face to black people to say there were no blacks there when we fought for an America that hated our guts.
Eastwood was wrong and spike was right to criticize the man.
