Even though The Avengers and their return to solo movie projects dominates the landscape of Marvel news at the moment, we mustn't forget about James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' Though it may have been a rather unlikely choice for filmic adaptation, Marvel is surging ahead with 'Guardians.' The shortlist of actors in the running for 'Guardians' leader Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) has just been released. It looks like the top contenders, at least the ones actually testing for the role, are Joel Edgerton ('Warrior'), Jack Huston ('Boardwalk Empire'), Jim Sturgess ('Cloud Atlas'), Lee Pace ('Lincoln'), and Eddie Redmayne ('Les Miserables'). There may even be a few more, but this is the list as we know it so far. 'Guardians of the Galaxy'is due in theaters August 1st, 2014.
Truth be told, there are probably two dozen more actors vying for the role, but the fact that Marvel is actually testing this lot speaks to the studio's heightened interest in them. I must say I am disappointed that Nathan Fillion is not in the running. I know my desire to see him in the role was originally somewhat of a gag predicated upon the fact that both 'Guardians' director Gunn and Marvel overlord Joss Whedon had both worked with him in the past, but the more I hear about Star-Lord, the more I think Fillion would have been perfect. That said, looking at this group, the one I think I would most support is Jack Huston. He may not have the established name as does Joel Edgerton, but his performance ability is unquestioned. His character on 'Boardwalk Empire'is by far my favorite to have come along in any of its seasons; so dark and complicated. That said, it'll still be interesting to see which names are added to the Star-Lord pool as this progresses.
What do you guys think? Do you like any of these gents for the role? Who would you cast?

Comment by Joseph E T Hughes on December 2, 2012 at 3:05am Just started watching Boardwalk Empire, and Jack Huston on that show is phenomenal. He may be my favorite character, and with Michael Shannon as competition, that's saying a lot.
I hope Jack Huston gets the role.

Jack Huston (if they don't get Adrien Brody for it) = Stephen Strange.
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on November 30, 2012 at 11:41am @Fungusmonkey I've heard great things about Pushing Daisies so now I guess I have to watch it. However I can already see a great movie moment having Jack Huston as Star-Lord walk up to The Hulk and just start yelling at him because he fucked something up while the rest of The Avengers all just stand back in awe of Star-Lord's balls.

Lt. Commander Armstrong - For the wry sarcastic sense of humor, Pushing Daisies. He was incredible in that show (off the air way too soon). Also, he was *great* in Lincoln. From what I hear (because trust me I'm staying away from it until Master Pancake mocks it), he's one of the shining parts of the last Twilight film. He's a director's actor, able to bring depth to a character which is why people like Spielberg and Peter Jackson work with him (I'm looking forward to his role in the upcoming Hobbit films). He also has that sort of "everyman" charisma to him. Just my two cents obviously, but as a huge fan of the comics, he would be my pick.
Plus, he's the only one in the list I could imagine fitting into a future group Marvel film alongside people like Chris Hemsworth and RDJ.
@Noel Penn - Based upon the concept art they showed a while back it looks like it's going to be most of the Abnett and Lanning team - Star Lord, Drax, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora. They are probably saving characters like Quasar, Nova, and Adam Warlock for future films (because it's easier to write a film about a team of aliens than have to explain the Nova Corps or the whole Captain Marvel Quantum Bands thing in a single film).
Comment by PirateLordBush on November 30, 2012 at 9:09am Does anyone know if they're gonna get some of Marvel's old cosmic guys? Like Quasar, Nova, Adam Warlock and such?
Comment by Alejandro Marquez on November 30, 2012 at 3:22am What is with the hard-on for Nathan Fillion on this site?
Comment by GorTheMovieGod on November 30, 2012 at 2:56am Thank you Brian for picking Lincoln instead of the new Twilight movie for Lee Pace. Really like that guy as an actor.
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on November 29, 2012 at 11:55pm @Fungusmonkey Pace has the look but nothing about the roles I've seen him in show me someone who can be Star-Lord.
Please feel free to correct me with examples. <-- Not sarcasm
