The New Lucasfilm Looking To Release Multiple 'Star Wars' Movies In A Single Year?
The web has been inundated over the last few weeks on what might become of the new 'Star Wars' movies; who's interested in starring, who's not interested in directing, etc. This is of course all a function of Disney's recent acquisition of Lucasfilm. In many ways, it's been a bit tiresome, but as a diehard fan of the original trilogy, I can't help but get caught up in the fervor and speculation. This latest piece of news comes straight from Kathleen Kennedy, newly appointed head of Lucasfilm. We had been hearing that the Disney/Lucasfilm conglomerate were looking to release multiple new 'Star Wars' films, the first to be released in 2015. Now it appears that their plan is even more ambitious than that. According to Kennedy, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, their aim is to produce "two or three films" a year. Considering that there has always been a three-year gap from movie to movie (both in the originals and in the prequels), this would be a monumental increase in output.
But is that a good thing? I'll admit to falling under the umbrella of the tawdry fanboy label, and that can often make it difficult to remain objective. So yeah, on the one hand, it's exciting to think that there are that many 'Star Wars' films are in our future, if only because it expands the number of story avenues that could be explored as well as lengthens the list of directing talent that can leave their stamp on this iconic franchise. The 'Star Wars' universe can be as massive and sprawling as the filmmakers can imagine, and the preponderance of new films would allow for a host of differing visual styles and tones to be applied to that universe. On the other hand, this crank-out-as-many-as-possible mentality could not be more dangerous for this series. Why is the goal to flood theaters with as many films as possible, and why is that approach being adopted before the first film in the new franchise is even released? Slow down, take your time, and make something great. It almost sounds like they're saying, "let's throw everything at the wall and see what sticks," and that is alarming. My one hope here is that she actually means that they'll produce multiple movies in one year, but then release them over time. Even that still suggests an overly-rushed plan, but it's at least somewhat more reasonable.
What do you guys think? Does the prospect of multiple 'Star Wars' films in a given year excite or worry you?

Kennedy is obviously talking about Lucasfilm in general making 2-3 films a year. There's nothing there about 2-3 STAR WARS films a year. People need to put quotes into context before exploding. Didn't you just learn that in the election or have you forgotten already?

kind of a misleading title to the story. They said "produce" 2-3 movies (probably only 2 though) a year which doesn't mean "we are gonna have 2-3 in theaters in a year". Plenty of movies make 2 movies worth in 1 sitting, through either splitting up the movie like HP/Twilight lately or like (iirc) lord of the rings shot 2 movies all at once (which could be done in a year with disneys crazy money/power) and them come out once a year/every other year.

My advice to Disney, fuck the fandom...reboot the whole franchise. Remake A New Hope for a new generation and work off of that. Treat Star Wars like any other literary adaptation and give it to a someone to make it their own for a generation then pass it on. I can envision Star Wars becoming a something of a canonical piece to genre film like Wagner's Ring Cycle is to Opera. Where it's a proof of great story-telling ability to direct a good Star Wars Trilogy and there will be many variations of the trilogies for generations to come. so to reiterate, let someone make their own star wars trilogy, fuck the fandom, and let it be a pheonix-like platform for film making.

I'm totally happy with the star wars films becoming a genre of there own. And why not. When you really think about it, Star wars isnt true sci fi! Nor pure fantasy. Its the perfect hybrid of both. Id love to see full length feature films about minor characters, events, etc. Why not? As long as the stories are good. We have the technology now where we can film anything.
