Scratch Spielberg Off The List Of Potential 'Star Wars Episode VII' Directors

George Lucas dropped a bomb on us recently when he sold his Lucasfilm to Disney for over $4 billion. That bomb was tremendous enough that we are still sifting through the rubble of what it means and the continuing fallout of speculation as to the franchise's future. Plenty of directors' names have already been bandied about in connection with 'Episode VII.' Matthew Vaughn and 'Safety Not Guaranteed's Colin Trevorrow are just the latest to be mentioned in this ongoing discussion. But to further thicken the plot, what about Steven Spielberg? He's always worked very closely with Lucas, and he even mentioned back in 2002 that he had wanted to do a 'Star Wars' movie but George wouldn't let him. So would he be interested now? Evidently not. Here's what he said when presented with the question during the premiere of his new film 'Lincoln.'

"No! No! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre."

I'm sorry Steven, not your genre? Sci-fi? 'Jurassic Park,' 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' 'War of the Worlds,' and what's your next movie again? Oh yeah, 'Robopocalypse!' I'm not saying that this is a ruse nor do I believe Spielberg will actually direct 'Episode VII,' but his reasoning makes no freaking sense. Also, it almost seems like he's either seriously deflecting or that he's been living under a rock and doesn't know Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney. I mean, "George's genre?" Really? Am I disappointed Spielberg is not even considering directing the next 'Star Wars?' No. The guy is a brilliant filmmaker and his movies are legendary, but this franchise needs a clean break, a fresh start, and I feel like Spielberg, being so close to the man, would have been a little too eager to make Lucas happy, if even only subconsciously. I think the new Disney/Lucasfilm consortium needs to keep looking at younger directing talent, especially those who have proven themselves in modestly budgeted sci-fi. It is nice that we nipped this Spielberg rumor in the bud before it dominated the conversation.

So once again, we ask, who do you think should direct 'Episode VII?' Could you have seen Spielberg in the director's chair? Would that really have been the best option for the franchise?
