Writer Hired For Two-Part 'Hunger Games' Finale 'Mockingjay'

Not too long ago it was announced that Lionsgate would be splitting 'Mockingjay,' the last book in 'The Hunger Games' franchise, into two films. Their first adaptive outing of the book series netted a more-than-substantial box office gross and has evidently encouraged the studio to milk every ounce of financial potential out of the literary trilogy. With the second installment, 'Catching Fire,' set to hit theaters next year under the direction of Francis Lawrence ('I Am Legend'), the pieces for the two-part final chapter are already coming together. The studio has just hired Emmy-winning writer Danny Strong to pen 'Mockingjay.' Strong won acclaim for his work on the HBO TV movie 'Game Change,' which centered on the 2008 John McCain presidential campaign. Prior to that, Strong was an actor with roles on shows like 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Mad Men.'

At first, this story meant very little to me, as I did not recognize Strong from his acting or writing credits. I vaguely remember hearing about 'Game Change' when it was airing on TV, but mostly because of Julianne Moore's portrayal of Sarah Palin. But then I saw he also wrote the TV movie 'Recount' about the Florida balloting fiasco surrounding the 2000 election. It suddenly dawned on me that he is probably the best possible candidate, forgive the pun, for the job. His forte is the very worst of real-world politics, and at its heart, 'The Hunger Games' is a dystopian sci-fi drama that is merely an exaggeration of the very worst of real-world politics. I can't wait to see what he does when allowed to work within a more fictional realm, while at the same time maintaining that note of political pessimism. Sure, the fact that he's adapting someone else's work means he won't have total freedom, but I do believe his political proclivities make him the ideal choice.

What do you guys think? Are you excited for 'Mockingjay?' Do you agree that Strong is a formidable choice?

Nice choice, but was Mockingjay dense enough to warrant a two part movie? Deathly Hallows was (and they still had to cut things out) and Breaking Dawn obviously wasn't, so which is Mockingjay closer too?

I totally agree with you Mr. Hiller, I think this may b a case where the film is better than the book.  The end of the book was very weak in my opinion,  If this guy can do something more  exciting with it, I'll be a very happy panda.

@Todd A.

I kind of know where you're coming from, although I ultimately liked the third book. But look at it this way - the book is solely from Katniss' point of view and from what we saw in the first film, the films are not.

Also, with a writer that seems to lean towards political fuck ups, we may get a more politically charged film. He can take the ideas that were in the third book and bring them to the fore.

Excellent Choice, he was influenced by Joss Whedon & Quentin Tarantino.....So a great choice indeed

Mockingjay was horrid and that is coming from someone who liked the first two books and thought the first film was decent.

Nothing can make me excited for this movie or want to see it. Most of the book was Katniss hiding in a closet and angsting. Do we really need to see two movies of that?

just as long as the proverbial andrew doesn't stab him in the gut I think this could turn out well

The big three have completed the "split the last book into two movies" triangle. Harry Potter, Twilight, and now this. So far, I still think HP is the only justified reason to do it.
