THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 8, Issue 23: Rollercoasting

THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 8, Issue 23: Rollercoasting

A sizable quantity of topics, not the least of which is some big news stories and the introduction of our new buddy Andrew, dominates this week's LEOG recording, but nothing quite so much as a nostalgic discussion of theme park thrills past, and what we think/hope the future of amusement park rides might be. Check it....

So up here in CT, there is only one Amusement park left. Lake Compounds has the best wooden rollercoaster, Bolder Dash where it is literally built into the side of a mountain, plus you blast through two towns when riding it.

La Ronde still exist, they have very awesome roller coasters like the Goliath. Got my tickets and I'm supposed to go next month actually :)

Oh and that island it is on... it's called Montreal lol

hi about what you said at 115 min mark about Sesame Street and Oscar's trash can. It is like the TARDIS. inside is a big house where he lives with his Fluffy, his pet elephant. what you was thinking about was from the film "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland" in withs Elmo finds a door that leads to Grouchland Oscar's hometown. you find out in the film that Oscar was thrown out from Grouchland because he was to nice. I can't enplane how I how this. some things just sticks with me.

Also, just realized.  Cyrus, the thing you're talking about with the ghost world section of a park with a hotel and everything?  That's the Golden Saucer from Final Fantasy VII.  The haunted house was the inn.

Loved the conversation about amusement parks.  If you ever find yourself in Denver, and you want to go to a moderately creepy amusement park, check out Lakeside Amusement Park.  Name sounds familiar?  That's because it's the same name as the amusement park in Silent Hill 1 & 3.  It was also used during filming of Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead.

There are many urban legends surrounding the park (people being decapitated on the Cyclone, falling off the Wild Chipmunk, suicide, etc.), but the only things I've found any information about is one confirmed suicide and several deaths on the now defunct raceway.  Regardless of whether the stories are true or not, the place definitely comes across as somewhere you don't want to be after the lights go out.  The park's main attraction, the Cyclone rollercoaster, was built in 1940 and is still running.  The frame is wood, with white paint peeling off of it, and looks like it could collapse under a strong wind. Just the thought of riding something like that can be terrifying.

On another note, concerning the people badmouthing the site: fuck 'em!  You guys are great!  Your podcasts have got me through many a boring work day, and introduced me to dozens of great comics, movies and shows.  More than anything, listening to LEOG provided a certain sense of camaraderie that I was missing when I moved to LA last year and had barely any friends with which to spend my free time.  Listening to your conversations would remind me of the conversations I would have with my friends, and it helped with being away from home for the first time.

Thanks guys, from the bottom of my heart!  Keep up the great work.

Man oh man, guys.  Not only do I live literally ten minutes from Six Flags Over Texas here in Arlington, I actually got my first summer job working there!  And hoooooooly shit was it a terrible place to work.   The staff is mostly comprised of either 16-year-olds out of school for the summer or 35-year-olds who have worked there for twenty or so years and feel like they are gods among the unwashed.  Fun fact: Six Flags is the only business in Texas exempt from Time-and-a-Half and Overtime laws.

I rarely comment on LEOGs but the ending touched me in a special special place.  That delivery of "Well then wake the fuck up, woman!" instantly put a huge smile on my face, a skip in my step, and perhaps a baby in my...something.

@Davril,

They do know about Dead Set and were very enthusiastic about it when it first came out. That show was your basic zombie story in a reality series setting. I think what they're suggesting is something that is obviously staged, like Survivor or the recent Great Escape.
