THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 8, Issue 16: Patriotism

Well, why not? It was just July 4th, after all, and there's no shortage of "America: Fuck Yeah" movies to talk about, some good, some not so good. You probably can already guess... Check it anyway...

Love The Show, just wanted to say and make sure everyone is aware that Will Smith actually says "Welcome to Earth" not EARF in Independence day.  This is a common misconception.

LONG LIVE THE LEAGUE!

@BlackHarp

Oh yeah that's a fair point, though the Sandman part I think was understandable as he thought he had killed Uncle Ben. Come to think of it, if I remember correctly the only person to tell him Sandman didn't kill Uncle Ben or killed him by accident (can't remember which one) was Sandman, so if I'm remembering it correctly, Peter's kind of a moron to believe him. What actually bothered me the most about the Harry Osborne fight was that Harry managed to sneak attack Peter without his spidersense going off, always thought that was weird.

@Crazypants and add to the fact that the scene right before Spidey pretty much straight up murdered Harry Osborn (who we didn't know actually survived because the movie was extremely unclear) and threatened to basically kick the shit out of Eddie Brock. And a few scenes before that killed Sandman (who we AND he didn't think survived) as well bragged to Aunt May about it.

I remember when Cyrus threatened to ban me a couple years ago when my name was The Angry Movie Dork. I was like c'mon! I didn't do anything that bad. I wasn't trolling or degrading anyone or any Spill content. I did embed an auto played music player on one's of their blogs though. I'll admit that was kind of a stupid thing to do. I guess it was kind of a d*cky prank, not out of hate for the site as I was and still am a big fan who religiously listens to all the content, but to see if anyone would notice kinda thing. Like the little sh*t Superman pulled in Superman III when he was bad Superman. So sorry to any Spill crew member listening. I knew it would get bumped to a later comment page, but I was younger, more curious and inconsiderate, so yeah, w/e, my bad. Luckily I never got banned, but I was pretty scared at the time since getting banned from one of my top sites would have made me sad.

Another Spill victim, RIP Ernest. Guys just keep talking about George Lucas.

Regarding the dance scene in Spiderman 3: Humor is subjective, you guys undoubtedly know this, you're smart guys, hence the only argument one needs to make to argue that the dance scene was not funny is to say that one did not find it funny (In my case I found it groan-worthy) the fact that Sam Raimi was trying to make it funny is honestly irrelevant. I mean by your guys' Tyler Perry movies can't be said to not be funny since Tyler Perry was trying to be funny. You guys are awesome, but that was just some terrible rationalization IMO.

Was really expecting Leon to be pro gun rights, not Cyrus. Anyways good to know you got the sensible position, Cyrus!

Another really good paper RPG you guys may want to try is Call of Cthulu. Very role play and investigative.

The initial scene from the premier episode of Newsroom is so dumb; objectively, the flurry of data declared by Jeff Daniels contains certain claims that could be rebutted in a true debate, but his moment was a demagogic spat not a reasoned engagement.

Are the two answers prior to his own intended to sound trite? Both are just shallow, shopworn bromides of Left/Right ideology. I know the panelists were constrained to answer in a single sentence, but I doubt they’d be uttered in real life. Jeff swiftly eviscerated both because they were lined up right for him to knock out.

Although his Conservative riposte is slightly misinformed; the US has greater liberty than Canada, at least, because we don’t have an Orwellian 1984-esque human rights commission that investigates free-born citizens who publish “offensive” material in print, such as republishing the infamous Mohammed cartoons in newsprint.

I disapprove most with the way the girl worded her question. Presumably, the opening scene was attempting to replicate the question posed to President Obama, whether he believes in American ‘exceptionalism’, when he was touring Europe three years ago. But the key word here is ‘exceptional’, not ‘greatest’. To claim the United States is an exceptional country is objectively sound. One plain fact: within the span of 150 years, say 1800-1950, the US went from being an insignificant nation to a world power.

Regarding people who get in your face about patriotism, I postulate that those people exist, or rather some distinct trait that influences them, because treachery is innately hated by most of the human population (just look at historical punishment for perfidy and you’ll find it’s always distinctly cruel), and not putting up a flag for patriotic holidays leans toward ambiguity about the country you choose to live in or, worse, disloyalty. We are indeed tribal creatures, though I doubt it’s possible to work avidly against that trait; deep roots of human nature are ingrained inside us each by tens of thousands of years of human evolution configured outside of civilization. That is a reality which modern-day Progressives and Liberals tend to ignore.

The Crusades were a defensive campaign, Rubio, to expel Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula, on which they had been occupying a major part of the land there for centuries.

Cyrus said something about America displaying patently evil actions in the past. Maybe that was just word vomit, ‘cause I have no clue what you’re talking about. If this country’s actions are compared to other Western countries, the US is quite benign on human rights and foreign policy, and if you throw in nations outside the Anglo-sphere and the Eurozone then we look positively saintly. Our history is not spotted with crimes that come even close to the Chinese ‘Great Leap Forward’, Japan’s ‘Rape of Nanking’, Germany’s ‘Holocaust’ (I know Germany is in Europe, just saying), etc. Nor is Pan-America a war/conflict stricken land, as Europe most definitely was prior to 1950. Come on.

I can’t wait for the ‘Parties’ episode, hope you do it soon. Bring up Project X, that movie was dope. I just saw it. The entire film is just honestly fun to watch. If you're the birthday boy are you automatically granted any tang of your choosing?
