French screenwriter/producer/director Luc Besson ('The Fifth Element') is a busy guy. He wrote the script for the highly-anticipated 'Taken 2,' is producing a television series based on 'The Transporter,' and will be directing a gangster movie with Robert De Niro called 'Malavita.' On top of all of that, Besson has announced that he will also write and direct a live-action, English language version of French comic book series 'Valerian and Laureline' It's the story of a intergalactic secret agent who travels through both time and space with his female sidekick Laureline. The comics were created by Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres in the late 1960s. Besson is so much a fan of the comics that he actually hired Mezieres as a conceptual designer on 'The Fifth Element.' No word yet on when production is slated to begin.
This project has been described as James Bond meets Dr. Who. If that doesn't sound awesome to you, I'm not sure you are currently alive. With the continued success of 'Mad Men,' it's clear that 1960's style and aesthetics are still popular. That, coupled with my unabashed love of cheesy 60's-era sci-fi, has me desperately hoping the look and feel of the comics will not be updated to fit a more modern sci-fi mold. I love the idea of a mod space agent jetting around the cosmos with his femme fatale companion; pure pulp gold. I haven't read the comics, but I may have to track them down after reading this description. Luc Besson is an interesting guy, not all the projects to which he aligns himself are of stellar quality (he did produce 'Lockout' after all), but he tends to stir up a hit every once in a while in some capacity or another. He's been directing family films for quite some time now so it'll be interesting to see him return to sci-fi.
What do you guys think? Could this something cool? Is Besson the right guy to helm this project?

Comment by Jer G. Gernault on July 3, 2012 at 1:46am laureline is no feme fatale she is much more close to....the mecanic in firefly, valerian being more like mal.
i m glad besson is a big fan of that too. but keep in mind he is a big fan of a certain comics he made a movie with and it tanked and failed epicly for me: adele blancsec had too much humur and not enough eerie- mystery-paranormal in it. a waste of my time in theaters. i have no big expectation of that new project of his.i just hope he doesn't mess it up too much.
Comment by Luke Hero on July 2, 2012 at 11:21pm I was with you until you mentioned your love of the 1960's... :( Poor black people, that's why we can't time travel.....
Comment by John Carter on July 2, 2012 at 11:04pm James Bond meets Dr. Who CAST David Tennant Please
Comment by King Badass on July 2, 2012 at 6:44pm I came. Yes, I don't care how disgusting that just was. After reading the description & watching the anime (horrible dub aside) all I have to say is this: HOW IS THIS NOT POPULAR!!?? Seriously, I'm not a big Doctor Who fan (even though I'm British) but I do love James Bond, Time Travel & femme fatales so combine all three & what do you get? EPIC WIN.
Comment by AndrewWILLSONThe ShogunOfAustin on July 2, 2012 at 5:37pm you know they made an anime out of it
Comment by Lastsuperjedi on July 2, 2012 at 4:52pm Could be interesting. Never saw Doctor, but I like James Bond, and I love comics, so this could be good.
Comment by Face McShooty on July 2, 2012 at 4:50pm I watched Lockout yesterday, I liked it.
Comment by Wodenson on July 2, 2012 at 3:10pm Yeah, he co-wrote Colombiana but he also wrote Leon: The Professional, so he is certainly very hit and miss. I give everything of his a shot but will certainly admit when he misses the mark. I am a big fan of The Fifth Element and Angel-A and will definitely give this a look once it comes out.
