Remember when Michael Bay told us that he was definitely not coming back to direct 'Transformers 4?' Well now that he is firmly on board as director, despite his previous claims, he opened up about the film during a recent interview and his responses offer some key information about what we can expect for the upcoming toy-to-film-to-franchise sequel. He indicated that the focus of the story would no longer be Sam Witwicky and his rotating, disproportionately hot female companion, but that he doesn't consider the next film a reboot because a certain amount of continuity from the first three will be upheld. He also suggested that a portion of the action in 'Trans4mers' may take place in outer space, though an epic battle scene on planet Cybertron is not likely for a couple of reasons. First, as Bay reports, the budget for the fourth film will be $30 million less than the budget for 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon.' Also, in Bay's own words, "I want to go a little off but I don’t want to go toosci-fi."
Ok, now we've known for a while that Shia LaBeouf would not be returning for 'Trans4mers' so the announcement that Sam Witwicky will no longer be the main character seems redundant. However, we all know well how easily studios can recast for the same role should an actor in a popular franchise disembark before the box office grosses wane. I'm glad they've opted to move on from that entire obnoxious family rather than try and pull a switch on us. Moreover, I think the human element is 90% of the problem with this franchise so I like the idea of setting action in space away from carbon-based dolts. On the one hand, it's a bit encouraging that the studio isn't letting Bay have as much money as he wants, a little financial discretion would be good for him. However, it's not as if we're talking about a low budget movie here, and he undoes any benefit of the doubt lent by the budget reduction when he says things like, "I don't want to go too sci-fi." *Knock knock* Bay, you're making a movie about GIANT SPACE ROBOTS! How much more sci-fi can you get? I beg you not to try and make this movie a heavy drama or, as you've failed to do in the past, a comedy.
What do you guys think? Do any of Bay's insights about 'Transformers 4' pique your interest? Do any of his statements concern you?

My only concern is Bay still drawing breath. (not a big fan of the man's style of directing) As such, I would have preferred a whole different take rather than an additional chapter, even if it is jettisoning some of the annoyances from the preceding movies.

Comment by Fernando Palacios on June 25, 2012 at 12:30pm ok I can keep saying what everyone already knows, but the thing is, this battle is over, we lose, the war for quality goes on and there are other movies that can still be save from this same fate, complaining against or in favor of the transformers films is pointless. the studio has no reason change its course, so they won't, if you don't like the film then don't go watch them, seriously! I know a lot of people that complains about the movies but still go and pay and watch the films....WHY!!!??? if you don't like them, then don't give hollywood your money or your time!
and for the people who keep defending this movies, please just stop! the Transformers movie are kid movies were the main joke is two dogs fucking each other and robots peeing on people... look, it's ok if you like the film, heck, no one has the right tell you should not go and watch something if it makes you happy or that you are wrong for it, but there is difference between something you enjoy and something that is good , and there is nothing wrong in enjoying something that is bad, we all do it, more often that we would like to admit it, but that doesn't change the fact that the transformers films are bad films

Comment by Angel_A on June 25, 2012 at 9:14am I hope this one doesn't feature an end battle that lasts an hour or so. It was incredibly boring.
Comment by John Lemus on June 25, 2012 at 7:59am I know I am one of the only people who has actually liked the Trilogy and for me if Shia LaBeouf is no longer the main character then I am down all the way. I am sick of his winy bitchy fucking attitude he brings nothing to any movie he is cast in.
