Barry Sonnenfeld To Bring Us A Metal Men Movie?
If you'd asked me to lay money on what I thought 'Men in Black 3' director Barry Sonnenfeld's next movie would be, I would've confidently guessed another 'Men in Black' sequel. However, there were whispers that Sonnenfeld was working on a comic book adaptation in secret. What untapped comic book property could possibly be worthy of the director of 'Wild Wild West?' Today we have our answer: DC's Metal Men...? That's right, Sonnenfeld is adapting the Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru created story of a group of six robot superheroes made of various elements from the periodic table. Each bot had powers loosely tied into his/her core element. For example, Iron is the strongman. So far, no further details as to who else may be involved with the project have surfaced.
I know I can be woefully ignorant of comic books sometimes, but seriously, who are the Metal Men? I had to look them up, I've read the synopses of their powers and origins, and I'm still at a loss here. Apparently they have some part in the 'Infinite Crisis' storyline, a book I keep kicking myself for not having read yet, so they didn't die out in the 60s as I would have initially guessed. I'm willing to bet, however, that very little affinity for these characters exists even among the most learned of comic book readers. So now the question becomes, why the Metal Men? What grand design could Sonnenfeld possibly have for them? Is this just a case of no self-confidence? Is he just thinking, "even if I screw this one up, who's going to be upset?" It's hard to say, but I can't say I'm excited about this idea, nor would I be even if a more talented filmmaker took up the project. I think it's time to go to my trusty Spillios for some insight on this.
Any Metal Man fans out there? Could a movie work? If so, who would be your choice to direct/star?

Remember Pierce Brosnan as the pipe-chewing Professor Kessler in Mars Attacks? I'd love to see Pierce play Dr. Will Magus (pictured above in the tweed jacket) and since it's Sonnenfeld, I figure Patrick Warburton is going to be involved in the cast somewhere.

I had a freaking crazy thought thought. Maybe he isn't making it for the comic book fans. Maybe he's making it cause he loved the comic when he read it. Maybe it will be a great movie cause he wants it to be a great movie. Maybe millions of fan boys won't have anything to say about it cause they don't know about it, and god willing the studio will stay away from it cause they know nothing of it. Maybe it will be a movie made by someone cause he wants to make it. What a freaking crazy concept.

Why the Metal Men? Why not? They are a silly, goofy, fun-lovin team of robot superheroes lead by a man which I swear was the prototype to the Professor in the Powerpuff Girls cartoon. With so many violent, gritty takes on superheroes of late, this could be a great family-friendly franchise that if done right will even entertain the adults.
If. Done. Right.
