Plot Revealed For Edgar Wright's 'The World's End'

Edgar Wright struck comedy gold in both of his big screen collaborations with Simon Pegg. The first outing was the 2004 zomedy 'Shaun of the Dead,' which co-starred Nick Frost. Then, in 2007, Wright and Pegg pointed their reverently irreverent magnifying glass at action cinema with 'Hot Fuzz,' again co-starring Nick Frost. Back in January, it was reported that the final chapter of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy would be called 'The World's End,' but that's all we knew. Well now not only has the plot been revealed, but it appears Wright is eying a September start date for 'The World's End.' The film was co-written by Wright and Pegg, and will once again see Pegg joining onscreen forces with Nick Frost. Universal hasn't given the official go-ahead, but sources indicate that this will occur shortly. The hope is to have 'The World's End' in theaters by spring of 2013. Here's the synopsis...

"20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries."

I had already engaged in a celebratory dance back in January when it was announced that Wright and Pegg had begun writing this film, but that didn't stop me from dancing again once the plot was revealed. Suffice to say, I am a fan of both 'Shaun of the Dead,' and 'Hot Fuzz' and I absolutely cannot wait to see 'The World's End.' It sounds like a strange sort of pre-apocalyptic farce, and it'll be interesting to see what threat arises to place the future of mankind in jeopardy. We know it probably won't be zombies again (sorry to use the zed word), so perhaps...aliens? That's just wild speculation, but it would be pretty cool. I am a little nervous about there not being a greenlight on the film only because Wright's 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,' as great as it was, failed to meet Universal's expectations. That's not to say the studio has never given a filmmaker a second chance, but it is a little troubling. Hopefully they'll remember that Wright and Pegg's first two collaborations made over $100 million worldwide and pull the trigger on 'The World's End.'

Are you guys jazzed for another Wright/Pegg team-up? Does this plot intrigue you? What do you think the threat will be?

Be interesting to see if the movie's set in Edinburgh, where the real "World's End" pub is.

Why do I feel there is going to be a homage to the "We will meet again" ending from Dr. Strangelove?

YES!  This is the movie that I have been waiting on.  With both Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead being fantastic I am sure that this will be just as good.  Can't wait for it to come out.

I have so much respect for Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg as Brits trying to do something INTERESTING in cinema instead of period costume drama or gritty yet boring real life drama.
