When it was announced that the long-rumored sequel to 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' was a reality, speculations as to its possible content were inevitable. However, those speculations have so far been fed directly by director Adam McKay who, while finishing the script with Will Ferrell, has been leaking potential plot points left and right. A couple weeks ago, he let slip a clue in the form of the words "custody battle." Now, McKay has dropped a second hint during a recent interview, specifically about the era in which it will be set and the societal changes taking place at that time. Here's what he said...
"It's right when all the news started changing with the 24-hours news cycle in '78 or '79. All of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors, and any time you're talking about diversity and the Action News team, that's always fun to deal with."
So 'Anchorman 2' will involve the Action News team struggling once again with that old, old wooden ship known as diversity? I suppose that could make for some funny moments, but it seems a bit familiar. The first film was all about the changing landscape of the job market and how the inclusion of a woman shook up the boys club. I hope there's more to this racial angle than just hitting those same beats again with a minority anchor in place of a woman. It just seems like we're in danger of getting an extremely repetitive sequel unless this threadline is somehow offset by the previously mentioned custody battle story device. I'm not saying this has turned me off to 'Anchorman 2,' that would be a bit hasty, but it does make me a tad nervous.
What do you guys think? Could they mine enough new material from this plot point to avoid repeating themselves? Why aren't they going to space like McKay joked about long ago and far away?

Comment by Mr. Jeri NoVa on April 26, 2012 at 7:52am Sounds good. So many people cringe from the topic of race because it feels so much better to let such uncomfortable vibes fester under the rug. Its easier to keep "why don't they just..." type feeling to yourself unanswered or understood. Props to the film makers for taking on a challenge!
Comment by That Guy Jv on April 26, 2012 at 1:01am Dammit, I wanted Step Brothers 2!!!
I don't like this. Racial issues are poisonous subjects. I thought the Baxter custody-issue thing was much funnier.
Comment by Derek F. on April 25, 2012 at 10:45pm Well....... When in Rome...
Comment by Mezza on April 25, 2012 at 10:08pm I saw enough Will Ferrell race antics in talledega nights.
Comment by Craig on April 25, 2012 at 6:55pm Anchorman was great and Taledega Nights was tollerable but EVERYTHING after that was SHIT! I'm gonna wait till it comes out on TV. If its the same deliberatley acting stupid, loud, and retarded schtick again then he's on the path where EVERYONE knows you shouldn't be on, the Eddie Murphy path.
Comment by Sam Hill on April 25, 2012 at 4:56pm I didn't like Anchorman. While it had its moments, it suffered from poor editing choices; the jokes just went on too long to point they ceased to be funny and just became awkward.
Comment by Grand Master Bushido Brown on April 25, 2012 at 3:49pm I wish Will Ferrel would make more serious movies.
I could care less at this, as long as it's funny bring me my sequal please. I miss Ron and the gang!
