More 'Iron Man 3' casting news is rolling in. Last week it was announced that Sir Ben Kingsley had signed on to play the villain in the third installment of the franchise, which is to be directed by Shane Black ('Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'). Now it seems Guy Pearce ('Lockout') has entered the fray as well. Pearce will be playing Dr. Aldrich Killian who, along with Tony Stark, develops the Extremis technology. Warren Ellis' 'Extremis' storyline, dealing with nanotechnology, was some time ago revealed to be the basis of the new film's plot, and Pearce's casting as Killian further supports this claim. In addition to 'Lockout,' Pearce will be appearing this year in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus.' 'Iron Man 3' begins shooting next month in North Carolina.
My distaste for 'Lockout' aside, Guy Pearce is a fantastic actor and I think he'll make a great addition to the cast. That being said, while Dr. Aldrich is crucial to the plot of 'Extremis,' I don't recall him being in it much. Unless they take some liberties with the story, Guy Pearce is going to have very limited screentime. It seems strange to me that they would get a big name like Pearce for so small a part, but perhaps it's a calculated career move on his part. Showing up in a superhero film as high profile as 'Iron Man 3,' even for a moment, certainly can't hurt your visibility for future roles. I'm really looking forward to see how all of these casting and story elements come together under Black's direction.
What do you guys think? Do you seem them beefing up the Dr. Killian character for Pearce?

Comment by Afro Heisenberg on April 24, 2012 at 1:36am Sounds like Jessica Chastain has been cast as well so even more good news!!
I am curious to see how much of the storyline in extremis they actually use. It's a great story, and I'm sure Black will deliver some great dialogue of his own, but if he struggles with the technobabble he should give Warren Ellis a call (a script co-written by the both of them would be AMAZING!!!)
Comment by Matthew A. Sawtell on April 24, 2012 at 12:51am Hm... warm up for DareDevil... or maybe the Sub-Mariner or possibly Dr. Strange? Hate to say this, but past 10 or so 'A-list' solo acts/teams at Marvel, the pool really gets thin. On the DC side of the house - I could honestly see him play a very serious 'Enemy Ace'.
Comment by Caleb Kahn on April 23, 2012 at 8:13pm Maybe getting Shane Black to come on board to replace Favreau was the best thing that could have ever happened. As much as I loved Downey, Howard, Cheadle, Paltrow, Bridges, Rourke, and Rockwell in their roles in the previous two films, Black's unbelievable casting of Sir Ben Kingsley and now Guy Pearce has elevated this film above an Iron Man film.
Comment by Mike on April 23, 2012 at 7:46pm Why wouldn't anyone want to be in an Iron Man movie? If you're a big enough name to get your own superhero, you might as well be a supporting character. That be said, Guy Pearce kinda looks like Ant Man.

Comment by Jon Riddle on April 23, 2012 at 2:29pm Look at some of the top-level talent that plays minor parts in these recent superhero movies. If Pierce is in as minor a role as you suggest may happen, then think about how good the entire cast for this could be!
Comment by Nikhil Sunil on April 23, 2012 at 12:54pm His puns were the best thing about Lockout.
Comment by TheMantaBluRay on April 23, 2012 at 12:53pm Pierce is a damn good actor. I’ve seen him in L.A. Confidential and Memento and he is pretty awesome.
Comment by Joseph E T Hughes on April 23, 2012 at 12:37pm Well, Pearce has earned my appreciation long ago in the form of Memento. I'm always happy to see him in a film, regardless of the size of the role.
Comment by Cab on April 23, 2012 at 12:32pm @Lt. Commander it's a double edged sword because one part of you says hey its good to see this big name on the screen but then to see them play such a remedial role is really distracting from the rest of the film. The most recent film that did this was Contagion...you had all these well known faces peaking their heads in to say their few lines and they were out. It's not a bad thing but it always begs the question of why didn't they just cast some Joe Schmoe for the role instead of this A-B list star?
