Gary Ross Will Not Direct Next 'Hunger Games' Film

As Lionsgate struggles to count all of its money from last month's release of 'The Hunger Games,' it appears the next installment, 'Catching Fire,' will experience a changing of the guard at director. Despite the fact that Lionsgate and Fox recently made nice and put together a schedule that would allow Jennifer Lawrence to star in sequels to both 'X-Men: First Class' and 'The Hunger Games,' it's been reported today that Gary Ross will not be returning to helm the further cinematic adventures of Katniss Everdeen. Ross, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the first installment, was said to have been in pretty intense negotiations with Lionsgate earlier this week over his salary and has now officially given his notice to the studio. 'Catching Fire' is set to begin shooting this coming fall.

What does this mean for the future of the series? Very little. 'Catching Fire' is still very much happening, and probably won't be delayed one iota by Ross' exit. That's not to marginalize the work he did on 'The Hunger Games,' he did a fantastic job, but when faced with a cash cow like this, Lionsgate is not going to let any setback derail the next movie. The good news here is that, while Ross certainly excelled during his time in the director's chair, it's not as if he left such an indelible mark on this franchise that no other filmmaker could step in. The source material still exists, Jennifer Lawrence is coming back, and it will be interesting to see how the overall visual aesthetic of the next film may change under a new director. For example, when Chris Columbus left the Harry Potter series after two movies, it allowed for Alfonso Cuaron to take over 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' which is still my favorite of the franchise. So now the question becomes, who will step in and take over for Ross?

Who would you guys like to see helming the next 'Hunger Games' movie?

as long as theres no shaky cam....couldn't see shit in hunger games...why even choreograph anything if you're gonna put the camera on a string and toss it...

Saw this movie last night and liked it a lot. Never read the books but have been told enough about them that I got the differences. I think the movie went as dark as it could to have the success that it had. It wasn't the violence that they could have ramped up but the characters dealing more with killing that could have made it much more darker. That said I'm getting older and with a kid of my own it was pretty fucked up to see kids killing kids like that and if they would have gone any farther I feel like your turning people away and gettin an R. I'm no prude but you can only take it so far for a movie aimed at younger audiences. That said I always wanted a movie like this when I was younger that told a story that was mature and not afraid to take darker. Anywho Tim Burton and have Johnny Depp in it.

I hope they keep the shaking camera for Catching Fire, that was awesome.

@Ajax A movie doesn't need an R rating to be dark. I don't see how the movie can't remain PG-13 while creating a darker atmosphere. It would be a hard pushing PG-13 that might barely scratch an R rating but I feel that it could be done.

Joss Whedon maybe, if Avengers goes well...

I think Joe Cornish would make a great director. It would be a great followup to "Attack the Block".

Alfonso Cauron needs to do this.  He wouldn't film it as tight.  He has a fantastic style that would fit this series wonderfully and I believe he has the talent to tweak the story just enough to make it more interesting.
