Leon's WTF Theater presents: "THE OTHER JOHN CARTER MOVIE".

By now the the 2012 movie JOHN CARTER has phased in like a deceased Jedi right next to Waterworld  and Ishtar as one of the biggest most expensive flops in the history of cinema. In truth, the movie isn't terrible. It fits somewhere between "Not bad" and "Meh". But let's be honest, $350 million is too much money to spend on anything that's even the least bit "meh".

Thing is, so many of the problems with the movie could've been easily forgiven if there was just something in it that was cool or weird or...even exciting. Some "Wow-factor" it needed or maybe the right director who had a vision. Maybe someone like Kerry Conran, the director of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

Yeah, it's an odd thing for me to say seeing as I don't even like Sky Captain but back when Conran was a hopeful for being at the helm of John Carter he put together a video pitch for the job. Check out the John Carter movie you could've had:

Ah well *sigh*. I guess there's no point in dwelling in the hypothetical.

Besides, if you want to feel better about the current John Carter you can always go back to the 2009 version titled "A Princess of Mars" starring ex-soap opera star Antonio Sabato Jr. and ex-pornstar Traci Lords.

Thinking I'm lying? See for yourself:

I finally saw it tonight. I thought it was a decent enough movie. Did it deserve to be a massive hit? No. Did it deserve to completely bomb, though? Not at all.

why don't people like Sky Captain? i love it, and a bunch of my friends really like it. sure some tightening was needed somewhere between the script, and performances, but it was a really cool twist of Deco Art using (at the time) innovative techniques (which have NOW become somewhat standard). very good movie to add to your queue somewhere between Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind during your snuggle with the cute girl movie night.

If you want to get a quick look at a 1917 published copy of A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, check out www.read.gov  . created by The Library of Congress.

Ishtar, unlike "John Carter" and Waterworld, still kicks ass even though it was a monumental flop. It was all just media spin and completely misguided contempt for Warren Beatty. That and the continual delays of its release. I will fight people tooth and nail to defend Ishtar!

If Tron: Legacy and Warner Bros.' attempts to sequelize Blade Runner are any indication, we can expect disney to put out a John Carter sequel in twenty-five to thirty years. Hollywood seems keen on cashing in on cult properties, no matter how small the returns.

Good thing about John Carter being in the public domain is we might still be able to get that version of the film. Just might be a while before any company is willing to take a drink from the John Carter well considering the Disney iteration seems to have mostly tanked.
