Even with the reboot of 'The Amazing Spider-Man' still months away, Sony is already prepping to continue the rejuvenation of the franchise with a solo shot for one of Spidey's greatest nemeses: Venom. Venom is an alien symbiote who attaches himself to living hosts and was featured as one of a trio of villains in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man 3.' The move toward a Venom spin-off is actually not surprising given that the studio had been considering a Venom film since 2008, and at one point it was close to being a vehicle for 'The Hunger Games' helmer Gary Ross. However it looks like things are moving a little more deliberately on the project now as Sony is actively courting new directors. One such director currently in negotiations is 'Chronicle's Josh Trank. In case you haven't made it out to theaters yet to see it, 'Chronicle' is a found footage movie about three teens who suddenly and unexpectedly acquire telekinetic superpowers; one of them succumbing to the darker potential of his new-found gift. Although no actors are officially on board with the new Venom project, it has been all-but-concluded that Topher Grace will not be reprising the role.
Josh Trank is absolutely the perfect choice for Venom. Not only has he already proven he can adeptly tackle superhero/supervillain storylines, but 'Chronicle' is a film about how obtaining a superpower can bring out the latent capacity for evil within any human being. Sound familiar? It should, because that's essentially the hook of the Venom character. Also, given Trank's ability to make wildly imaginative, character-driven, and (most importantly to studios) incredibly successful epics on meager budgets, I'm excited at the prospect of a Venom movie that doesn't lean on expensive special effects and focuses more on the emotional journey of the protagonist/antagonist. Plus, Trank knows how to tell effective and engaging stories from the villain's perspective, as it would stand to reason Venom would be told. We would get to see a more well-rounded, multifaceted Eddie Brock who slowly became more and more professionally ambitious and jealous before acquiring the means to let his corrupted id run free. Will all this definitely be in the Venom movie? Not necessarily, but with Trank at the helm, it very well could be.
What do you guys think? Do you like Trank for Venom? Are you interested in a Venom movie at all?

Comment by Sean Price on March 13, 2012 at 2:29am This could be interesting if they go the route of seeing Venom go through his stages of becoming more evil. I don't read comic books so I don't know if he has a sympathetic (shitty childhood) backstory, but it could help the film (like Magneto). If not I feel it would be actually better. They should create (for once in a while) a movie where you follow the bad guy and watch him harness his powers to do evil. As to take away from the reality of having someone who wants to kill people let's not have him kill anybody and as a subplot let's have another evil entity who he crosses paths with.
Comment by sam mccain on March 12, 2012 at 10:44pm Honestly when was the last time we can recall anyone doing a film about a villain or even a villain origin story for that matter??? Obviously he has to start out sympathetic or there can be no real drama, but that being said I think it would seem strange to have the main character fighting Spiderman. You watch the whole movie to care about the villain and then are forced to watch the final battle and route for "Spiderman??? The bad guy???" Role reversal is weird in that situation. It would make more sense to end it before you introduce Spidey. Making us watch an Eddie Brock movie where he turns into Venom right at the end would suck too.Hey!!! We have that!! It's called Spiderman 3 - __ -
Venom having his own movie???? WHAT!
Comment by William D White on March 10, 2012 at 11:34pm What if the "new" Spider-Man suffers horribly and the new Venom movie is a hit? AWESOME! I love spiderman but kinda tired of seeing him after 3 moives, even if Amazing Spider Man is a hit, I'd rather see something I haven't seen before, a comic superhero/villian with his own movie thats somewhat deep.
Comment by Spydah on March 10, 2012 at 8:53pm My opinions about such a quick "reboot" of Spider-Man aside, this is a risky property to undertake given its inevitable connection to the "new" Spider-Man movies. What if Venom is a hit and Spider-Man suffers horribly or vice versa?
If either tanks or performs less than well, it will seriously hinder the others ability to pick up a sequel since those characters are so linked together. I already think the reboot is too soon and I don't plan on going to see it unless it gets as much fare as Batman did on its reboot.
Comment by Berserker on March 9, 2012 at 8:20pm if he does take the job, he might as well get the guy that played andrew in chronicle to be eddie brock or which ever venom they're doing since that actor is good at being a troubled teen
Comment by el senor on March 8, 2012 at 4:10pm I thought that the cgi and over all look of venom in spiderman 3 was good. but topher grace? that was a bad idea to say the least.

Comment by Sight Gag on March 8, 2012 at 9:34am I'd like to see it made and I wouldn't mind them somehow making it about him having to learn not to abuse his powers and by making him realize that some of his suit could get on maybe someone to play as Carnage. That could be really cool.
Since they are "ultimizing" Spider-mans origin it would not be too far-fetched to follow the comic books and have Eddie Brocks family actually have a history with the Parkers. If Sony were to go this route, what is to stop them from using Andrew Garfields Peter Parker in a cameo role, highlighting their relationship and the origin of the suit and then pushing forward with Brocks solo adventure? I could see this working, but I would prefer to see them tackle this topic in a future installment. Gives us a chase scene on the roofs of New York, with Peter in pursuit of Venom, who is making off with Mary Jane.
