When Summit examined the box office returns for its 2010 action comedy 'Red,' the fact that they would move forward with a sequel was a bit of a no-brainer. The film, which starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren as Retried and Extremely Dangerous secret agents, made nearly $200 million worldwide. So when it was announced that Robert Schwentke would not be returning to helm the sequel, the search was on for a new director. It looks as if that new director will be Dean Parisot ('Galaxy Guest,' 'Home Fries') who is currently in final negotiations to take over 'Red 2.' The script will once again be penned by Erich and Jon Hoeber who wrote the first film based on the Warren Ellis graphic novel. All reports are indicating that the primary quartet of actors will be returning to the sequel and that filming will begin as soon as Bruce Willis finishes shooting 'Die Hard 5.'
I loved 'Red.' I found it to be just the right combination of action and character-based comedy. I am highly anticipating a sequel, though I'm not completely sold on Parisot as a director. On the one hand, his career has been made up of movies that blend comedy with other genres; sci-fi with 'Galaxy Guest' and crime films with 'Fun with Dick and Jane.' I also really enjoyed 'Galaxy Guest' despite how silly it was. On the other hand, 'Fun with Dick and Jane.' He also hasn't worked in almost six years so I wonder if there will be a few cobwebs to shake loose. As much as people are speculating that Summit wants 'Red' to be their new franchise in the wake of the final curtain about to fall on 'Twilight,' I don't subscribe to the idea that we'll get more than just the one sequel to 'Red.' It just doesn't have the legs to be a long-running series in my opinion.
But what do you guys think? Are you excited about a 'Red' sequel? Can you see this franchise continuing beyond a part 2?

These posts aren't written by the actual Spill Crew. They're usually written by FungusMonkey, Salisbury, or MetalVirgin I think.
Other than that thought, while I didn't hate this movie like Leon did, I still thought it was pretty mediocre. New director makes me hopeful though.
Comment by Clocker910 on February 25, 2012 at 7:42pm RED was alright by me, nothing too special just some dumb fun
Comment by Cab on February 22, 2012 at 12:39pm I dug the first movie, but I really don't know what they are going to do with a sequel. And yeah if I recall a majority of The Spill Crew had mad issues with the first film. To each his own.
Loved RED? I thought the entire Spill Crew, if not loathed it, had major problems with it.

Comment by Obed Casillas on February 21, 2012 at 1:49pm I actually enjoyed the first movie for what it was. I don't see where a sequel would go but if I have as much fun as I did watching the first one. I don't care.
Comment by John Lambo on February 21, 2012 at 1:48pm Do you mean Galaxy Quest?
Comment by The Tourist on February 21, 2012 at 1:43pm All we need is news on that Unstoppable sequel and Leon will be a happy camper.
