A few weeks ago, it was rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be joining Sylvester Stallone in Summit's action/drama 'The Tomb.' The film, which will be directed by '1408's Mikael Håfström, tells the story of a security expert who designs an ostensibly escape-proof prison; one from which he himself must then escape when he's sent there for a crime he did not commit. It didn't take long for the Schwarzenegger rumor to be confirmed, and details about his character even surfaced; he would be playing another mysterious inmate who tries to keep the prisoners connected with their humanity. So now the question arose as to who would play the villain. Who have the stones to oppose both Sly and Arnie? According to recent reports, and an interview with 'The Tomb's producer Mark Canton, that actor is none other than Jim Caviezel ('The Passion of the Christ'). Caviezel is set to play the warden of the prison in which both Stallone and Schwarzenegger find themselves. No word yet on when filming will begin.
Many people seem to be writing off 'Expendables 2' due to its recent adoption of a PG-13 rating. While I still look forward to 'The Expendables' sequel, if for no other reason than its formidable cast, I find myself getting more and more excited about 'The Tomb.' First of all, by all accounts it looks as if this will be an R-rated film, which is excellent. And with a smaller cast, one would also assume the film will be more focused on Arnie and Sly than will be 'Expendables 2.' And now they've added Jim Caviezel into the mix? Seriously, count me in. We can make all the jokes we want about the studio actually having to call in Jesus Christ to provide an adaquate antagonist for the combined might of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, because that's admittedly pretty funny, but the fact is that Jim Caviezel is a great actor and I keep hoping his next project will be the one that separates him from the holy role that seems to have defined him and proven a burden for his career. I'm really interested to see how the dynamic between these three actors is shaped by the screenplay.
What do you guys think of Caviezel as an actor outside 'The Passion of the Christ?' Do you like him as the villain to work against Arnie and Sly?
