Comment by Zgamer on May 26, 2012 at 5:46pm Sorry guys but I am not on your side here. Now I was not crazy with this film because while it is actually pretty easy to follow if you are focusing on it (I came in expecting convolution), the problem of where it throws you off is how the flashbacks and events are edited together. There is little introduction to these, so you are not always clear when and where the events are taking place. After a while though, I started to get my bearings.
I will concede too that the reveal was a bit underwhelming. I suspected it would happen, but yeah it could have very well been anyone (especially with the way it was shot and edited, it felt like that scene in the coffin in Lost where they had back-ups just in case they wanted to change it). It was not a terrible thing, but it could have been better executed.
However, while it did drag at parts, I was never truly bored with it. It is supposed to be devoid of emotion because that is the environment they are selling. Not just the 70s vibe of cold war fear, but the cold and calculating aura of spy business. It is emotionless because you never know who can manipulate your feelings or actions. I think it fit the story well.
I also disagree with your opinion of Gary Oldman. I think the strength of his performance is how restrained he is. Other than being something new for him as an actor, it reminded me of Richard Jenkins in The Visitor. It is not the showy bits that make it so good (though Jenkins had a couple showy moments), but the way they build the character from his vocal pattern to his appearance. It is a very subtle performance and just the right kind for that character.
Overall, I like it even though I don't love it. The camerawork was top notch, the set design was spot on, the acting was well done on a whole, the writing was literate and I did not walk away feeling like I wasted any time. Maybe I was not as blown away as I hoped, but surely I never thought anything lower than:
HIGH MATINEE
Comment by Jordan101 on May 10, 2012 at 5:08pm being a brit myself , i thought the movie captured the doom and gloom of the 70's really well ,after about the 30 min mark i really got gripped into the story and found the movie to be a really good thriller , i didnt think the plot was hard to follow and all the acting was top notch (mark strong stole the movie for me) . My only gripe with the movie would be that we dont see any of karla who is suppose to be on the same level as smiley , and dont get any real reason to why mole would defect to the russians other than 'the west is shit'
Comment by Austin Bond on April 10, 2012 at 9:56pm I fucking loved this movie; it was perfect.

Comment by agentcooper on February 27, 2012 at 9:04pm I have to agree with these guys, honestly. I typically like slow, complex films, but this was just too much atmosphere and not enough emotional substance. It's wasn't just the pace that turned me off either -- the transitions between scenes (or lack thereof) were so disorienting, to the degree where I thought the film had broken at one point. This movie was too discomforting to be genuinely entertaining, and it was too convoluted for viewers to develop a clear opinion of British spy operations.
Good movie guys but not for everyone. I saw this yesterday and i agree the first part is very slow especially by today audience expectations (they have to throw in something entertaining or funny every 2 minutes), but the 2 hour is very good.
totally worthy.
Comment by Nicholas Hill on January 21, 2012 at 5:43pm totally agree with you guys concerning this film. major disappointment
Comment by voidman 23 on January 8, 2012 at 4:04pm i pissed myself laughing when Cyrus completley mispronounced Ciaran Hinds as it if were spelt "syrian" (actually pronounced "keer-on"). Yes it sounds stupid, but I'm from Ireland where Ciaran is an extremely common name
