I hear what you're saying but I think you missed my point. I have no problem with science. My problem is that you, Cyrus, and my ex-girlfriend would like to use science to explain something that can't be explained by science yet. Yes, that is how the brain works. No question about that. I acknowledged that in my first comment. But someone has yet to present me with a single bit of scientific evidence that the chemical reactions in your brain that make one feel attraction or love or whatever you want to call it only last for 6 months. Hell, Cyrus said a year so now I'm hearing two conflicting "facts". Even if there is a unanimously agreed upon length of time that HAS been accepted as fact, all that says is that the puppy-dog eyed, honeymoon stage of the relationship has ended. Like John Henry Eden said, you're describing "lust, which has a definite scientific basis, both biological and psychological. Love is infinitely more nebulous." I don't believe that the way our brains work has any impact over how deeply we truely care about someone. It's that simple. Are there any meds in the world that you could give to my grandfather to make him stop loving my grandmother? I don't think so. They've been together for damn near 60 years. Mankind is capable of amazing things like that. I mean, here we are on a website devoted to movie reviews. Filmmaking is an art form and art is all about feelings and emotions. All I'm saying is that there comes a time when, no matter what, you can't ignore those things. You have to step back and accept that science CAN'T explain everything yet.
The cynical and jaded bit is another issue entirely. There is nothing cynical or jaded about science, except when it's twisted to support a definite cynical AND jaded point of view. In this case, Cyrus'.

What your girlfriend was describing is lust, which has a definite scientific basis, both biological and psychological. Love is infinitely more nebulous. There are definitely a whole lot of theories out there, though - most seem to revolve around the idea that lust and attraction are only the first stage(s) of a long-term relationship, and something along the lines of "attachment" or "bonding" fills in the rest.
Short answer, science can't explain everything - not yet, anyway.
Comment by Longleke on November 17, 2011 at 10:40am I've had a previous girlfriend try to use this "chemical rush" thing that Cyrus is so adamant about to justify saying that "technically love doesn't exist". Can someone on Spill please try to explain this to me logically?? The girl was 15 so naturally logic wasn't her best skill. She said love was just chemical reactions in the brain that can only last for 6 months (Cyrus says a year). She also couldn't point me to a single bit of scientific research. To some degree I understand this point, but what I more or less told my girlfriend was like "No shit, that's how the brain works. For example you only like chocolate because of a chemical reaction. But saying that love doesn't exist because its just a chemical reaction in your brain is no more scientific than The Matrix saying that nothing exists because its all just electrical signals in your brain."
"If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain." -Morpheus
Seems to me that this argument is just a really cynical and jaded person's vain attempt to look down their nose at love. Or in this case, young love. Please, someone, tell me how I'm wrong. I'd love to actually have this explained by someone who's NOT a 15 year old girl.
Comment by Jon on November 16, 2011 at 11:20am this movie's been out for a month already, and Im still upset it isnt playing in my hometown
I really do want to see it
plus I saw Felicity Jones in Chalet Girl and she rocked in it
its pretty cool too that Anton Yelchin is getting some more range as an actor
Comment by dream_the_sandman on November 16, 2011 at 10:58am I thought from the trailer the girl lived in Russian or someplace that's harder to travel to from the US. It doesn't seem like some insurmountable problem to move to England, or visit there every once in a while.

Comment by John Henry Eden v2.0 on November 15, 2011 at 9:18pm Crazy Stupid Love was the first thing that came to mind, but this movie sounds infinitely better. I'll definitely check this out.
