LEOG Companion- Vol.3 #7: Live Action Heroes!

Inspired by the new "Where the Wild Things Are", this week on The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen we delve into one of our favorite subjects: Comic book adaptions!

Our favorites from television and movies. Those we love and those that...well Kayla was there with her long list so you can bet there was puh-lenty to talk about. Hell, not just Kayla, Kristin and Allison are all in attendance with a special appearance by Merry. The boys are outnumbered and outgunned on this episode. It's like the sequel to the famous Geek Girl show.

But then no LEOG is complete without a plethora of arcane references that send most of you scratching your heads (or flying over to wikipedia), which is why I like to toss you one of these Companions ever so often. To better enjoy this week's show here's some highlights of some of the obscura we turn back the dial to touch on If some of this doesn't make sense to you now it will later:

The noir radio drama Pat Novak for Hire - Set on the San Francisco, California waterfront and depicts the city as a dark, rough place where the main goal is survival. Pat Novak is not a detective by trade. He owns a boat shop on Pier 19 where he rents out boats and does odd jobs to make money.

"Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" was my favorite until I discovered Pat Novak For Hire.

I love old-time radio, but I haven't listened to enough of the detective stuff. Of what I've listened to my favorite is Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Will definitely check out Pat Novak.
And if you're into hard-boiled radio shows, there's a podcast out of Canada of a show called Black Jack Justice produced by a group called Decoder Ring Theatre. You should definitely listen to the shows, but at least check out the page for the great mock pulp covers for each episode.

I think (not sure here) that Maverick-Farenheit's comment on Rescue Rangers was based on a siamese cat working for one of the show's villains: Fat Cat. And yeah it was WELL over the limit for racial slander.

And why by the love of God did you have to remind me of Electra Woman, Leon?? The trauma was bad enough the first time! OW! OW!!!

Leon, I am soooo glad to know I'm not the only one who listens to these old shows. But, I figured you were a fan, anyone who talks about audio books.. Has to have cut his teeth on these old shows.

Apologies Leon and Moxie. I guess I got a little carried away there. Just as soon as I read the two words 'Racist' and 'Disney', I just saw a flash of white hot rage. Didn't realise that's what I'd written til I just looked back.

Slow down, Maverick-Farenheit, she never said that Disney has ONLY been offensive to Native Americans. You're putting words in her mouth to grind your own axe.

And as I've said, everything you listed (except for Rescue Rangers, idk WTF you're talking about there) that Disney did is "offensive" by today's standards, but none of it was mean-spirited in it's conception, just insensitive.

If you're itching to take up arms a racist oppressor (more than just throwing a few barbs) I would suggest you find one that's more directly harmful or relevant.
Either way, leave Moxie out of it.

Hey I'm just happy you at least included the lovely Lynda Carter in your banner. She was my first celebrity crush and will always have a soft spot in my heart.

@ Moxie. Really Moxie, you want to believe that Disney was only racist towards Native Americans? Open your eyes and you'll notice that there's a load of shit in there that is offensive to Black people and Chinese People.
The crows from Dumbo are a prime example, not so racist when you watch it except for the fact that the voices were just white guys doing their best 'Black impressions'.
Another example 'Jungle Book', granted I'm making a more tenuous argument with this one, but the black sounding King Louie (a monkey mind you) singing how he wants to be just like a real man. Look at the subtext of that and you'll never want to see that film again.
Then we could go for one of the oldest examples of racism against black people, in Fantasia. With the hoof shining sambo centaur. Disney actually worked hard to remove that piece of video evidence it was that offensive.
Then we move onto the Chinese stereotypes, just look at all the cats in their films, Lady and The Tramp. Those siamese cats just moving in tandem and singing in high asian voices, 'we are siamese if you please. We are siamese if you don't please.'
Then look at Aristocats for an even worse example, where the Siamese cat, (they seem to like using those don't they.) He talks in broken engrish, (and no I didn't spell that wrong.) about fortune cookies and egg foo yung, while playing the piano with chopsticks.
Then finally look at Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers for chinese that's so offensive it would make Mickey Rooney hang his head in shame. Strangely enough they're still cats, that sell their pristine fighting fish that is their pride and livelihood for a crate of fucking dead fish because they turned down the money. Yeah if money don't work dead fish'll surely work.
Don't ever assume that you're people were the only target of Disneys animated fervour, otherwise that's the very definition of 'Ignorance'.
