If it's crap... We'll tell you

Carlyle

Ask Carlyle: Who should be the next Batman villain?

I get this question A LOT. Mostly as a joke these days (we even got it at the Spill Party Podcast), sure, but we still get it. So I figured I might as well get around to answering it. Truth is, I'm sick to death of all the STANDARD Batman villains. I've seen them done to death. Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Two-Face, Catwoman. How many more incarnations do we need? Here are the 5 different guys I personally want to see in a new batman movie.

5) Someone NEW.

Let's face it. Nolan is going off in his own direction, doing his own things. And since the Batman we're watching is clearly entrenched in the YEAR ONE universe, before most of his enemies really came out of the woodwork, there's nothing wrong with the idea of working with some Batman writers and coming up with a really great NEW villain. Worked for Paul Dini when he created Harley Quinn. It could work here.

4) Hugo Strange

Hell yeah. Deranged psychiatrist who discovers Batman's secret and ultimately wants to become him? There's some real danger there - especially if Bruce begins counseling over the death of his lifelong love.

3) Killer Croc

Something new for the Batman universe that Nolan is creating would be something not...quite...human. Killer Croc is an awesome villain who could be adapted in a number of interesting ways. Circus freak, genetic experimentation. I have faith that Nolan could bring Croc to his gritty world and make it stick.

2) Deadshot.

UM. Yeah. Suicidal assassin looking to get whacked by a superhero who won't kill him? This could really create a tough story in which Deadshot gets meaner and meaner, trying to push Bruce over the line while he wrestles with his inner demons and his desires to actually kill. ALL THE WHILE Deadshot is framing him for the murders. Now there's a Batman movie I'd take questions on.

1) Zsasz

Brutal deranged serial killer who believes his targets are zombies that he frees from this mortal coil, then marks up his own body to keep tally? Yeah, that sounds like a Nolan villain. It would also help continue the series slide into darkness - something of an attractive notion compared to the bright and colorful look and feel of the action films that the other Superhero movies tend to have. This is the guy I want most to see.

I love the idea of putting Zsasz into the next movie since we have no idea where he went after the events of batman begins. However, there are some enemies like Hush, Black mask and the Riddler (of course :P) who also would work. I think what Christopher Nolan would go for would probably be a villain which has a philospohical edge, as we have seen with the joker, two-face and ra's al ghul. I think that since Batman is on the run, his only way to exculpate himself is to get two-face in the open so maybe we will not have seen the last of him. Hugo Strange seems like a good choice to get into the dark Knight's head once more after the previous movie having been mostly about the villains. I personally loved Aaron Eckhart's performance very much and so i am probably gonna go with Two-face and the Riddler to try to redeem the studio for making batman forever. My personal 5 villains would be:
1. Two-face
2. the Riddler
3. black Mask
4. Zsasz
5. The Red Hood

Well, since Zsasz is given a cameo in Batman: Begins, having him as a main antagonist in the next film is the most logical choice. Personally, I know Chris Nolan does not want to do a film with Robin because he thinks the character is just too cartooney but I could see him bringing out the true dark side of the young, orphaned acrobat. Of course, that would mean involving the murderor of the Flying Graysons, Tony Zucco, in the film (I know what you're thinking and no, Two-Face did not kill Robin's parents!). Next, I would like to see Nolan give his own personal zeal to a more bizarre villain in the Rogues Gallery: Maximillian Zeus, the deranged billionaire that believes himself to be the Greek God of Thunder. I could see the Nolan brothers creating using modern science to build a great story arc around this character. Finally, I agree with you Carlyle in that Deadshot would be wonderful to see on the big screen. Though based on their current track record, these film comapnies apparently don't listen to feedback from the fans (SEE: upcoming Justice League project), so I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. Besides, the Nolan boys haven't done us wrong yet!

I think the one that actually can be a gateway to new charactars is actually joker again. I'm not saying it should be anytime soon but from what I rememeber The Joker tends to re-incarnate differently pretty much in each apperance after a long time away, so it could work. Maybe a hair slicked back and trench coat buttoned up style, a controled choas of the Joker. And with his re-apperance you could bring in haley quinn and that could add in the realtionship of not only Joker and Harley but the mother/daughter like relationship between harley and Ivy. Possibly even delve into the joker's mind deeper. But from your list, Croc doesn't seem to fit into the universe that Nolan Likes with the ultimate realism of such a zany comic, and I 'm not sure Zsasz from a villian stand point could stand on his own. I'ts probably corny but I want the classics, Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin, and how about a true from the comics rendition of Bane. And as another love interest maybe pre-catwoman could be Ra's daughter who's name escapes me right now.

Oh man, definitely Zsasz, I'd love to see how Nolan pulls his character off.

Zsasz seems like the most logical option from your list. He needs a different weapon though.
