Ask Carlyle: Who should be the next Batman villain?
I get this question A LOT. Mostly as a joke these days (we even got it at the Spill Party Podcast), sure, but we still get it. So I figured I might as well get around to answering it. Truth is, I'm sick to death of all the STANDARD Batman villains. I've seen them done to death. Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Two-Face, Catwoman. How many more incarnations do we need? Here are the 5 different guys I personally want to see in a new batman movie.
5) Someone NEW.
Let's face it. Nolan is going off in his own direction, doing his own things. And since the Batman we're watching is clearly entrenched in the YEAR ONE universe, before most of his enemies really came out of the woodwork, there's nothing wrong with the idea of working with some Batman writers and coming up with a really great NEW villain. Worked for Paul Dini when he created Harley Quinn. It could work here.
4) Hugo Strange
Hell yeah. Deranged psychiatrist who discovers Batman's secret and ultimately wants to become him? There's some real danger there - especially if Bruce begins counseling over the death of his lifelong love.
3) Killer Croc
Something new for the Batman universe that Nolan is creating would be something not...quite...human. Killer Croc is an awesome villain who could be adapted in a number of interesting ways. Circus freak, genetic experimentation. I have faith that Nolan could bring Croc to his gritty world and make it stick.
2) Deadshot.
UM. Yeah. Suicidal assassin looking to get whacked by a superhero who won't kill him? This could really create a tough story in which Deadshot gets meaner and meaner, trying to push Bruce over the line while he wrestles with his inner demons and his desires to actually kill. ALL THE WHILE Deadshot is framing him for the murders. Now there's a Batman movie I'd take questions on.
1) Zsasz
Brutal deranged serial killer who believes his targets are zombies that he frees from this mortal coil, then marks up his own body to keep tally? Yeah, that sounds like a Nolan villain. It would also help continue the series slide into darkness - something of an attractive notion compared to the bright and colorful look and feel of the action films that the other Superhero movies tend to have. This is the guy I want most to see.

I personaly want to see nolan reinvent the riddler, I don't want to say that Jim Carrey did badly at portraying him but we have received arkham asylum and arkham city which made the riddler, instead of a delugenal sidekick into a crafty cold hearted stuck up mastermind and I would love to see nolan remake this insanly intelligent mastermind of a villain

I really like these choices Carlye, to my knowledge Killer Croc hasn't been done so i would also like to see him in action also Zsasz in as well because, like many have said, he was in batman begins but i believe who could have made a bigger contribution to the franchise.

Zsasz was in Batman Begins, Carlyle. He was the one who was about to attack Katie Holmes and the kid before Batman swoops down and lands on him.

it's Anne hathaway as Selina Kyle and Toma Hardy as Bane. they officially announced it today. I really liked Tom hardy in Bronson and Inception, so i think he could pull it off. Anne hathaway has recently only done love and other Drugs which was good but she was also in films like Bride Wars that were terrible. But as Nolan seems to have a tendency to get good performances out of people, I am optimistic regarding the dark Knight Rises. i honestly would've preferred the Riddler and Black mask but i think catwoman is clearly a MUST if you wanna do batman and Bane can be realistic. I just hope they don't f*ck this last one up :S.

The raison d'etre of Deadshot (his need for batman to kill him) is pretty similar to the nolan/ledger depiction of the joker. His manic attempts to entice Batman into killing him was already evident in his depiction in the comics, but the dark knight's "I want you to do it" joker would ring a little familiar with deadshot. Also you run into problems with Croc, in that, to depict him in the nolanverse he couldn't have a stature beyond the possible for a normal human, and his other features and abilities would all be difficult to explain logically. Also, he isn't the most challeneging villain, lacking the brains of joker/riddler/pyg and simply just being a big pissed of green guy. He's a good supporting villain, not a central. A really good idea might be a pair of enemies something like Strange puppeting Zsasz or Croc. On the other hand I would love to see a kick ass Nolan version of Bane, incidentally my favorite villain (despite being one of the worst looking). He rivals the dark night in every way, and significantly outclasses him in some respects. More than anything, thats what I want. A villain that can go toe to toe with the Bat, and still outwit him. Zsasz may seem like the best fitting character, or at least the best fitting one that might live up to my hopes, but really he lacks the name recognition of a character like two face or the riddler. We can only cross our fingers and pray nolan keeps the slide into darkness unimpeded and we see an even darker continuity onscreen. (sorry for shitty spelling)

rumour has it now that Tom hardy will play Hugo Strange. this would be really cool, espcecially since batman's whole quest is threatened, as he sees himself as a symbol to get people to stand up for their rights but with Hugo strange trying to imitate batman it could become really dangerous if he starts killing people he wants to get out of his way. W kinda got a hint in The dark knight with the batman copycats. maybe that's just a foreshadowing of how bad things are gpoing to turn out once a sociopath like Strange dons the cape. I could see Tom hardy pull it off, too especially since in "Bronson" he bears a resemblance to Hugo Strange. As for Zsasz we got to see him in batman begins but haven't seen him since so maybe he'll show up for the big finale. The question ultimately is; can everyone be batman? To which Nolan's answer would definitely be: No.

@ Chris87 It woul be only a insult to Ledgers performance if the had someone trying to mimic Ledgers performance but if they went with the Arkhaum Asylum way where the Joker reinvents him self it could work, constantly, dont think they will do that, but I think they should.

I don't care who the villain will be I truly feel that if they replaced Heath Legder it would be an insult to his performance. The real question, how is Nolan going to make the story work. It is most likely that who ever the villain is he or she would have received his or her inspiration to commit crime from the Joker's work in TDK. If I had to guess, odds are the villain may be a woman because Nolan has not used a female villain yet, and I don't think it would Ras Al Gool's daughter, because how will it fit in with the Joker. Any way if it is a female villain it will be annoying hearing all of those Dark Knight "RIsing" jokes and we know for fact that it will not be either the Penguin or the Riddler. (even though I think Neil Patrick Harrison would have made a decent Riddler)

Batman vs. Dark Knight !!!
From my childhood I was interested in two powers in the same level of speed or energy begin to clash or fight or face each other !!!
I remember when I was watching the animation films like : Grendizer or Sindibad or the Iron Man or Sasuki or Fifth ... even when I was reading the Superman and Batman Comics ... I was always waiting for the villain who have the same look and power that make him stand against the Hero ... and the reaction of the other characters around them ...
How the bad use his look to lie to the other characters that he is the original hero ... and he is killing and stealing and doing bad to broke the name and the image of the original hero !!!
And how the day come when both face each other and how the people around can't find out what happen and who is the good and the bad and who will win !!!
I think facing your bad image is kind a good new beginning to clean up your name and put the things where they belong ... !!! ...Specially we are speaking about the continuity of the previews movie " The Dark Knight " where we had Two face who is still having a chance to come back !!! because there is no last word about him being dead !!!
And if you guess the name Two faces and having two Dark Knights ... one made by Two Face who is the bad one to ruin more and more the good image of the real dark knight !!! then it will be kind a good beginning for a continuity of the last movie ...!!!
As for using other characters like The Penguin or the Scarecrow or Riddler or Bat-woman or Robin or anyone ells in the list .. I have no problem with them because I am sure both Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan will bring the reality to those characters ...
But I am not agree in any case to bring back Joker ... I think it is not a good idea to use another actor to play the role of Heath Ledger ... I think it is for the best to leave the Joker alone for now ... and I hope they will leave it forever ... not as what they did to Brandon Lee's Character The Crow !!!!
If they let me write the screenplay for that movie ... I will make The Batman vs. The Dark Knight !!!!!!
