Spill on CNN - and my reaction

By now I'm sure several people have seen the video on CNN regarding the 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' web leak. Near the end of the segment they quote a blogger whose statement appears right above - well what do you know - a Spill page! A quote taken from the bloggers review. Normally people would love to see their page featured on such a prominent news website. Needless to say this isn't a cause for celebration as I'm beginning to to see the sparks of a raging fire in the form of comments posted on blogs and discussion groups. All this time we've been pushing for more exposure and this is how we get it. We can never do anything the easy way, can we?

Of course we don't condone what happened with Fox's property and support them in any course of legal action they take against the person or persons responsible for the leak. I guess that sentiment isn't easily resonated, though, when your page appears behind the quote of someone who illegally downloaded the film and publicly gave his opinion on the pirated copy.

I posted a couple of blogs about the video already to gauge the reaction from members. No use trying to pretend it's not there. As with the movie that spurred this situation it's already on the net and trying to remove or hide it would be damn near impossible. Although the talk centering on the video is not as heated as I thought - yet - I felt it was my responsibility as creator and content manager of Spill.com to address a potentially serious situation.

Anyone who is close to me can tell you the last two months, and this week in particular, have been extremely busy times for some of us in Austin and for all the Spill team in New York. Without disclosing too much, Spill has undergone a major change. In due time you'll know the nature of this new phase in Spill's still early life. Not to make excuses, but Wolverine and his latest cinematic adventure was the last thing on my mind.

That said, let me be forthcoming and tell you I knew about the blog containing the movie review, and made it clear I didn't want it featured on the front page. In retrospect now maybe I should've deleted the post, maybe I should've thought more about the repercussions of such a blog. Or maybe this is one of those occurrences that is simply no big deal and will be forgotten in a day or two. All I can say is I expressed my wishes and focused my mind on what I thought was more important at that time.

Nevertheless, many people want to blame the blogger for anything that may happen as a result of his post, whether it be a minor quick lived flame war on a forum, or the government coming in and sending some Spill crew to a Federal prison. My response to that is blame me. No one has made a stink over the video, no yelling, no one bitching out someone else. Things are pretty much business as usual. I just felt, after reading some of the Spill member reactions, It was my responsibility to be more proactive in this matter and I apologize to anyone I made feel as if this was handled unprofessionally.

Comment by yoman on April 25, 2009 at 1:45am: i have to give you respect man, you run a damn good website. you are amazing to the memebers to the extent of limiting your social life and you are not to proud and mighty to admit when you're wrong (which in this case i don't think you are). that's pretty amazing and as the co-host 5,000 (that just sounds...wrong) you lead something pretty special here. don't beat yourself up over this, you didn't do anything wrong.

You are in total contact with all members. The shows are pretty much directed by the member's emails. You answer questions, you post their blogs. YOU HANG OUT WITH THEM! Korey my man, what you have here is special and almost one of a kind, next best thing is a freaking chat room, don't ever knock yourself for not doing something. With everything you do on here you limit your personal life and then you have things to do there, so don't ever, what ever the context say you need to be more proactive. You're the work horse, the straw is on your back, and we all pray it doesnt break. I know this sounds like a demand or that I am bitching you out but I mean it out of respect and praise man, I have never seen a site ran 24/7 like this one, let alone by almost one man. (not to leave any one out, but Korey is the figure head and all)

I know you didn't want to be part of any illegal actions, but everyone knows about the piracy, it's the big elephant in the room, and to come down on one website is crazy.

Comment by Kim on April 5, 2009 at 4:44pm: some steps have already been taken. such as the offending blog has now been removed along with other community blogs mentioning it. obviously the Spill crew doesn't advocate piracy, so I hope that Fox and other bloggers understand that. The site itself shouldn't be held responsible for the actions of one user!
