Guillermo Del Toro Confirms 'Haunted Mansion' Is Still Happening

Guillermo del Toro is a perpetually busy guy, it seems he's never just working on one movie at a time. 'Pacific Rim,' his mechs vs. aliens sci-fi epic is in post-production, and he's recently stated that he's going to give 'At The Mountains of Madness,' which fell apart at Universal back in early 2011, another shot. We also know that Legendary is already calling for a 'Pacific Rim' sequel, which del Toro will co-write if not also direct. Among the laundry list of other projects to which his name has been attached, one of the more puzzling was a reboot of 'The Haunted Mansion.' This would be Disney's second attempt at adapting their popular Magic Kingdom attraction for the big screen; the first being that less-than-quality 2003 effort starring Eddie Murphy. Del Toro was at one point said to be writing the movie, but little had been heard about it since. However, during a recent interview, del Toro confirmed that the new 'Haunted Mansion' is happening.

"Haunted Mansion is very much alive and in process. Disney is very supportive and we are doing another draft of the screenplay… Yet another draft… And they really want to do it. I know we're going to talk about other possible directors, for me to produce, and having written it, produce it for somebody else. It's going to be scary. Hopefully it will be fun scary, rather than funny scary. It's going to be fun but the idea is to make it scary like when you go through the ride as the kid – part of you is charmed and part of you wants to get out of there."

So there you have it, whether we like it or not, we are getting another 'Haunted Mansion.' Remember right after 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' came out, and Disney thought it could turn all of its rides into feature films? After 2003's 'Haunted Mansion,' they pretty much gave up that ghost and focused on milking as much cash as possible out of the 'PotC' franchise, which is why I can't fathom their wanting to remake it. I guess I'm interested in this new version of 'The Haunted Mansion,' but if it weren't for the involvement of del Toro, I can safely say I'd be writing it off completely. I think Guillermo is on the right track with the tone he wants to strike with the script. There's a big difference between mining the inherent enjoyment factor that attracts us all to scary stories and abject silliness that in turn mutes the effects of anything scary in the story. I would actually be more on board for this if del Toro were also directing, but he's proven to be a heck of a producer and part of me hopes he'll campaign for Juan Antonio Bayona (who directed the del Toro-produced 'The Orphanage') to helm 'The Haunted Mansion.'

What do you guys think? Would you see a del Toro-produced 'Haunted Mansion?' Or has the Eddie Murphy version sapped any and all goodwill toward this property?

IMHO The success of the Pirates Franchise is indicative of the of the potential of turning the epic Disney rides into movies. Obviously the lackluster results of the first HM shows that the right people need to bring the right ideas together. Hollywood knows how to make a success with pirates, been doing so since the silent era.

It's not so easy for me  to put my finger on what went wrong with HM, Huge talent was brought together but mixing comedy with  Gothic horror? maybe should be left to history and Abbott and Costello?

I wish del Toro the best of luck and do look forward to the release.
