Director Mark Romanek has not had the best of luck working with big studios. Ever since his 2010 breakout hit 'Never Let Me Go,' he has struggled to find a foothold within the studio system. First, he unceremoniously departed from directing duties on Universal's 'The Wolfman.' That perpetually troubled reboot, starring Benicio del Toro, was then completed by Joe Johnston. Then he was attached to Disney's upcoming revisionist version of the story of Cinderella. The new 'Cinderella' currently has Cate Blanchett attached, and is in the middle of searching for its titular heroine. But it seems Romanek has now exited that project as well. Word is that his vision for the film was much darker than Disney was comfortable with, which, funny enough, is also rumored to be the reason he left 'Wolfman.' Production on 'Cinderella' is set to begin this summer.
This story gives me very little hope for this so called revisionist 'Cinderella.' I like Mark Romanek as a filmmaker, 'Never Let Me Go' is pretty incredible, but I don't understand why Disney would hire him for this in the first place if they weren't willing to take risks. They had to be aware of his track record before giving him the gig. We're talking about the director of a pensive, melancholy sci-fi tale who then left a freaking horror movie about a man-eating wolfman because the studio thought he was making it too dark. I'm not saying I expected Disney's newer version of 'Cinderella' to be super bleak, but it just seems like they were never going to be on the same page with the helmer they hired. With all the fairy tale re-imaginings that have come about, 'Snow White and the Huntsman,' 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,' etc, I gotta say I find the prospect of a darker 'Cinderella' most intriguing of all. I hope the fact that Disney couldn't see eye to eye with Romanek isn't an indication that they are playing it overly safe in order to appeal to a mass family audience.
What do you guys think? Disappointed Romanek is off 'Cinderella?' Think there's still hope that Disney will be at least a little ballsy with this revision?

Comment by DennisBel on January 9, 2013 at 7:40am He should fire the agent that linked him up with less-than-decent projects like The Wolfman and Cinderella.
Comment by The One They Called Chucky on January 9, 2013 at 3:03am Never Let Me Go is pretentious as all fuck. Overrated beyond that. Proof that good Cinematography and strong performances can only go so far when the story is middling, the plot developments are cliched to that of harlequin romance love triangles to the point of being boring, and the movie has nothing to say outside of, "oh, look and see how bad things are for us un-proactive characters". It's a well made movie about almost nothing that leads nowhere for its characters. It almost convinced me to not read the book it was based on, which is actually pretty engrossing; i.e., everything the movie is not.
Comment by RogueLatina on January 8, 2013 at 5:32pm Nothing short of Cin carrying two shotguns and katana will get me in a theater to see another "fairy tale" reboot or re-visioning. Once Upon a Time is a one off so let's stop trolling the past and start focusing on new ideas.
Comment by Rabid Chicken on January 8, 2013 at 5:21pm Never Let Me Go did not impress me at all, so I'm not too sad about this.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on January 8, 2013 at 4:10pm Best news of the day. Romanek seems like he wants the paycheck but can't convince himself fully to deal with big brother looking over his shoulder.
