Frank Darabont Hired To Rewrite 'Godzilla'

Stomping through Tokyo may not be so easy after all. Warner Brothers reboot of the famous cinematic lizard Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards, has just hired none other than author Frank Darabont to do a final rewrite on the script. Darabont has adapted several of Stephen King's works for the screen (including 'The Shawshank Redemption' and 'The Mist'), but it was his work on AMC's 'The Walking Dead' that earned him an extra boost of geek cred. The production on 'Godzilla' is slated to begin in March and the current script has been penned by Max Borenstein ('The Seventh Son'); from a story by David S. Goyer ('The Dark Knight'). There have also been rumblings of a battle brewing, not between Godzilla and Mothra, but between exiting Warner Brothers producers Roy Lee and Dan Lin and Legendary Pictures. This tiff may even end up in court. As of right now, 'Godzilla' is due in theaters May 16th, 2014.

Wow, a shot-in-the-arm for the new 'Godzila' arrives simultaneously with a potential setback. Isn't that just how all Godzilla movies play out? Good or bad, there's never just one monster. Frank Darabont coming aboard is great for this project. My biggest concern from the start was that screenwriter Max Borenstein has virtually no previous experience. Granted, that's not always a prerequisite for handing in a great screenplay, but after the abysmal disaster that was Roland Emmerich's 'Godzilla,' this franchise desperately needs a homerun. It's a bit troubling of course that this is the second rewrite we've heard about so far. Drew Pearce ('Iron Man 3') was brought in not so long ago. However, Darabont's work on 'The Walking Dead,' before he departed as showrunner, as well as his Oscar-nominated work on the Stephen King projects, can only benefit the reboot. Plus, 'The Mist' is a giant monster movie in and of itself so I'm interested to see where Darabont might find places to leave his mark on 'Godzilla.' My hope is that the legal skirmishes that appear to be on the horizon don't end up delaying the release.

What do you guys think? Excited Darabont is coming aboard? Any misgivings about his involvement? Who is your favorite Godzilla enemy?

I know but aside from Scorsese who has even been making films forever no director gets better with age I can think of his movies are great and Walking Dead season 1 was meh but his name literally means absolutely nothing to me. It's ilke when spielberg produces something it doesn't really mean much unless he's directing

Yeah, but age has no effect on filmmaker's movies. Darabont just did "Walking Dead." Coppola hasn't put out anything outstanding in quite some time.

I loved this mist, but let's not forget how long ago those movies where lol that's like Francis Coppolla rewriting Texas Chainsaw lol I don't give a fuck lol

"Shawshank Redemption?" It's one of the best films in the past 20 years. I'm not a fan of "The Mist" but I appreciate what it did. And "The Walking Dead" is one of the best shows on Television. "Green Mile" is magnificent, but to say it's old and only label that one...

Either way, "Godzilla" is going to make money and quite a bit, most likely. "Pacific Rim" will too, but I have a feeling it's not going to jive with some people.

Yeah Frank Darabout has no real track with me Green Mile was a long time ago lol this to me is probably the most pointless remake ever getting the most nerd support but we'll see Pacific Rim will be better probably

Don't get me wrong, I'm insanely excited for "Evil Dead" and think it's going to be great. I just think the marketing needs some work to get the new batch of "ED" virgins in the theatre.

Also, I know "Cloverfield" isn't "Godzilla," but it's the American one. As in the American monster. As for the invincibility problem, I'm sure there will be something that can work with hurting him. If not, then you have characters we actually care about trying to get to a destination without getting killed. Mind you, we have the director of "Monsters" and now Darabont here. They will have something. The only thing that I'm rattling with is how much Darabont is "rewriting."

I see and understand your points. First off, Del Toro is making one and it's called "Pacific Rim;" if Edgar Wright made this it wouldn't make any money; and Spielberg would have the son live in the end (I'm joking of course). Second, As big as "Evil Dead" is now, It's still a cult film and not many people are as familiar with it as "Godzilla." While all the marketing is nothing but blood, gore and doesn't give a comedic vibe that the original did. It's very off putting to people even with Raimi and Campbell attached, while still being just a remake that might or might not work. As a fan of "Evil Dead" their marketing isn't the best so far and I think that is one of the reasons they delayed "Carrie;" to market "ED" more, as they are both distributed by subsidiaries of Sony. I get it was an example, haha. Third, the only american "Godzilla" movies have all been shit. So far, we only have King Kong and the "Cloverfield" monster. We haven't seen an actual great high-budget "Godzilla" film and this could be the start of something genuine in this series or genre. I see and understand your points, I apologize if I seemed rude before, I just think there is a lot to account especially with dealing with genre fans from this site who will dive at any opportunity to prove someone wrong.

@Whiffandril I have to address that while Evil Dead 2 had humor Evil Dead 1 was pretty straight forward and a little over the top I think based off the trailer this works really well.  But my point is unlike Chainsaw Massacre or Friday the Evil Dead Franchise still has some legs or new angles to take.  It looks like a fun over the top scary ass movie.

As far as Godzilla goes Cloverfield really isn't a Godzilla movie it's a survival movie with a huge monster and really that's what a Godzilla movie should be I guess that's the only way to make a good one lol.  It's the superman principle how do you make an invincible character interesting for modern audiences.

I just don't see the point these movies work in japan with low budgets but we've seen what happens when america does one. If Del Toro, Edgar Wright, Spielberg, etc. was attached I'd be excited, but I find it weird this movie is getting some support, but the Evil Dead Remake isn't.  Even though Evil Dead has the original producers, A great writer, and a non studio director.  I just find this to be one of the most pointless remakes ever and of course when I say good movie I mean fun I just don't see how it works outside of a Bmovie level of filmaking

@Anthony Stokes

Myself being a child of the '90s as well, how do you make a movie about a giant Gorilla good? Ugh, I don't know... Maybe bring on a writer and director who cares and can take the original, classic, story and make it as good if not better than the original (depending on certain opinions). Darabont knows what the fuck he is doing.
