Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs Biopic Finds Distribution, Gets Release Date

The idea of Ashton Kutcher ('That 70s Show') playing iconic tech magnate Steve Jobs probably doesn't sit well with many, and I count myself in that camp of descent. Nevertheless, the one thing I can say for Joshua Michael Stern's 'Jobs,' is that early production photos have revealed that Kutcher is the spitting image of the late Apple co-founder. The movie will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah later this month and now it looks as if Open Road Films has picked up the distribution rights. On top of that, or maybe as a result of 'Jobs' finding its distro partner, the official release date(ish) for the movie has been disclosed. 'Jobs' will arrive in theaters in April of this year. Meanwhile, Sony's Steve Jobs biopic, to be penned by Aaron Sorkin ('Moneyball,' 'The West Wing'), still has no release date in sight.

Probably the best thing that could've happened for Stern's biopic was to be released ahead of Sony's. This was a near certainty given the fact that Sony's project still had not cast its lead role, but problems could have still arisen that could've potentially narrowed that gap between the two releases. So we're getting Kutcher's take on Jobs first? That's nice. I still don't give a crapple. I can't stand Kutcher as a performer no matter the genre. I think 'Butterfly Effect' pretty clearly proved he's just as inept at drama as he is at comedy, so apart from his resemblance to Steve Jobs, with the help of the hair and makeup department, his viability for the role is highly suspect. I'm also not a fan of Open Road as a company. They've only put out two films worth talking about, 'End of Watch' and 'The Grey,' and their reliance on the shadiest of marketing tricks, staged audience reactions and an actual "post your darkest secrets on Facebook" campaign, long ago soured me on them. I'll still see 'Jobs,' but like so many Apple product users, I'll trade it in for something better down the road.

What do you guys think? Are you interested in this version of the Steve Jobs biopic? Could there be any reason the filmmakers cast Kutcher other than his resemblance to Jobs?

Have to agree with Roboto, his name will sell tickets. Still it'll be interesting to hear about the development of this...

@The Dubya
Somehow I can't visualize him in Expendables 3

Seeing how most of his recent movies (hell his movies in general. I don't really recall a HUGE Ashton Kutcher vehicle of the top of my head) have ranged from mediocre to bombs in terms of box office, they'd be wrong in that....so I'll just say that you're wrong :)

Honestly, "name" actors don't have as much pull as they used to anymore. I mean other than Will Smith, just plopping in one single big name doesn't guarantee shit anymore like it used to. People are much more akin to making recognizable brands like The Avengers and The Hobbit and the Transformers and Twilights successes, movies where the concept > whoever's actually in it. If anything, the only time it works is when you get stunt casting crap like Valentine's Day/New Year's Eve or The Expendables which instead of just ONE name, they grab EVVVVVERYBODY they can think of and throw em in a blender of a movie.

But yeah, stick Ashton in just one genre film and people's opinion of him will change overnight.

He only got the role of Jobs because he's a famous name and his name will sell tickets!

The Butterfly Effect's problem was its script...all the actors INCLUDING Kutcher did what they good and did just fine. I still don't know why we're all "supposed" to hate Ashton for (again, it's like natural nerd insticts to attack this guy at every turn), but I simply...don't.

[DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR WAS FUCKING AWESOME STFU]

....ahem.

But yeah, between Taylor Lautnet, Katyhryn Heigl, and modern day CBS sitcoms (All. Of Them. Succcccccccccccck.), Ashton's nowhere near as bad as the hype suggests. Not even close.

Steve Jobs = a dick that doesn't know how to act in any situation

Aston Kutcher = a dick that doesn't know how to act

No, I think they found the perfect person to represent Jobs.

The Butterfly Effect is the only reason I 'haven't' completely written off Ashton Kutcher. Damn Brian how do you critique an actor's acting ability. I thought he was damn good in that film, played the emotional roller coaster quite well.

Jeez Brian, tell us how you really feel about Ashton Kutcher.

I agree with Doug Tien. why do you have to bring your own bias into it ? this isnt a personal blog. And Butterfly Effect is a great film.
