It's not been an easy road for Summit's remake of 1986's 'Highlander.' First they had Justin Lin ('Fast Five') on board to helm the film, but he departed. And then Summit brought in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to take over directing duties. Fresnadillo seemed an odd choice for the project at first. Despite helming the 2007 horror sequel '28 Weeks Later,' he was much more well known, and well regarded, for his stellar, but very arty thriller 'Intacto.' Still, at that point things looked to be progressing nicely for the remake. Ryan Reynolds was confirmed for the immortal sword-swinging lead, and the existing script had just undergone a rewrite by Melissa Rosenberg ('Twilight'). Now it seems Fresnadillo has also exited the film. It appears he and the studio could not agree on a direction for the remake and decided to amicably part. Fresnadillo had already left one remake (of 'The Crow') to work on 'Highlander.' No word yet on a potential replacement.
I have to say, I'm happy for Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. I really like him as a filmmaker and I was more than a bit concerned when I heard he was taking over this project. On the one hand, he has the artistic chops to potentially do something interesting with what is, in my opinion, so unfortunate a choice for a remake. I like the original 'Highlander' alright, but it's nothing that begs to be repolished and reintroduced to a new generation. It's a remnant of its time and so many similar story structures have cropped up since its initial release as to make it thoroughly uninteresting and irrelevant. I could be wrong of course, there could be something worth mining from this tired story, but I wonder if trying to do something different and compelling with the material isn't exactly what landed Fresnadillo at odds with the studio and sent him packing. Are they now just going to recruit an obedient yes man to quickly churn out their vision for the movie? Frankly, at this point, I don't care who they get to direct because Rosenberg's fingerprints on this make it something I categorically do not wish to view.
What do you guys think? Disappointed Fresnadillo is out? Who would you choose to replace him? Are you at all interested in this project?

Comment by Badman3000 aka H.N.I.C on December 3, 2012 at 4:56pm As Die Hard Highlander fan I love to see a good Highlander remake. Their nothing they could do to Highlander that Highlander the Source didn't Fuck Up.
Comment by Jon Riddle on December 3, 2012 at 3:37pm First off, we fanboys know the truth about Highlander films. Say it with me, class: "There can be only one."
Secondly, we alerady have a remake of Highlander. It was called Highlander 3.
Comment by stiver on December 3, 2012 at 3:25pm Hopefully this is a sign that this movie's head will finally come off, and die completely.
Comment by Civilized Worm on December 3, 2012 at 2:55pm I'm still waiting on a new video game for Highlander. If this passes, then maybe there's a chance of there being a video game tied in with this remake. But then again, video games based on movies tend to suck, and vice versa.
Comment by Jared King on December 3, 2012 at 2:54pm I love the original, possibly my favorite movie of all time, and there are others who love it as much as I. And you know what we DON'T want? A remake.
Comment by Civilized Worm on December 3, 2012 at 2:50pm Remake of Highlander? Blasphemy! The movie is still awesome, there's no need to remake it.
Comment by Allan on December 3, 2012 at 2:47pm Any upcoming movie, where one of the participants have worked on one or multiple Twilight movies is doomed from the start
Comment by Chaos Jumper on December 3, 2012 at 2:43pm I would say "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!" but then there is the sequel . . . the animated TV series. . . and the bad video game. . .
Comment by Biz on December 3, 2012 at 2:25pm This is a series that could really do well in today's franchise market, if done well. It's all in the script, but a hot, bad ass sword wielding immortal is not any more crazy than sparkly vampires.
