It's not unusual for studios to adapt popular television series for the big screen, and often the shows chosen for adaptation fall under the umbrella of classic TV. Or at least, it's more likely that classic TV gets the big screen treatment than does the current lineup of shows. Well now it seems we can add 'MacGyver' to the list of posthumously adapted television series. It appears that New Line Cinema is putting together a movie version of the late 80s-early 90s adventures of a secret agent (played by Richard Dean Anderson) with the uncanny ability to escape danger using the simplest of household objects lying about. New Line has entered talks with James Wan ('Insidious,' 'Saw') to direct the 'MacGyver' movie. Apparently Wan's upcoming film 'The Conjuring' is testing so well that he is quickly becoming one of New Line's favorite directors. No word yet on a finalized deal or whether Anderson would have a part in the movie.
This is a tough one. On the one hand, 'MacGyver' was never a show I legitimately watched from start to finish. It wasn't a show with characters and storylines in which I was invested. It was always about the gimmick of seeing which items would he would use to solve the episode's central crisis. The biggest challenge that faces New Line and the writers of this screenplay is to develop the hero and the story so that the audience isn't just impatiently waiting around for the next resourceful plot device. The flip side that argument is that I was one of the people who thought 'The A-Team' was too silly, and too slight a show to make into a legitimate movie. Turns out, the movie version of 'The A-Team' succeeded by embracing that silliness. If they can do it, 'MacGyver' can do it. I really like Wan as a director. 'Insidious' is one of the scarier movies I've seen in the last few years, and there's no denying that he started something monumental with 'Saw.' Perhaps it was Jigsaw's murderous ingenuity that put into the minds of the studio the idea of Wan's directing 'MacGyver.'
What do you guys think? Are you at all interested in a 'MacGyver' movie? If so, do you feel the studio is making the right choice in seeking out Wan to direct?

Comment by SirD. on November 14, 2012 at 6:50am And a Sanford and Son movie gets passed over yet again. To quote the french cat from the old Warner cartoons "Le sigh." The show was just such a product of the time... I was a fan of MacGuyver, loved RDA in SG-1, and I hope this movie doesn't see the light of day.

Comment by ACE on November 13, 2012 at 7:41pm Brad Pitt as MacGyver. Ban Affleck as Magnum PI. Surprised these two shows were beaten to the screen by the likes of Charlie's Angels, Starsky and Hutch, and the A-Team
