You'd have to be blind not to notice all the Daredevil buzz on the movie sites today. It seems Fox is on the cusp of losing the rights to the visually impaired superhero who doubles as Hell's Kitchen lawyer Matt Murdock. The rights will revert back to Marvel/Disney if Fox fails to put a new film into production very soon. There were reports that Marvel and Fox were going to engage in some bizarre, MLB-style trade in which Marvel would extend Fox's Daredevil rights if Fox returned control of some of the tertiary characters in the Fantastic Four franchise (such as Silver Surfer and Galactus). This appears to have been denied, rather staunchly, by Fox. However, it appears that Joe Carnahan ('The A-Team,' 'The Grey') is in talks with Fox about possibly directing the new Daredevil. Will he sell them on a concept they want to pursue before the rights revert?
I certainly hope so. Earlier reports indicated that Carnahan's concept could be described as a 70s thriller in the style of Frank Miller's Daredevil. You don't have to know too terribly much about comics to know that Frank Miller's Daredevil run was one of the best things to happen to that character. I would love to see Carnahan, quickly becoming one of my favorite contemporary directors, bring us a grittier, more (forgive the pun) well-drawn Matt Murdock. My hope is that if Fox doesn't bite on Carnahan's concept, that maybe Marvel/Disney will have the foresight to take it on. Given the Disney half of that equation, and the darker nature of the Miller stories, this may be a pipe dream. What do you guys think?
Would you like to see a darker, Frank Miller style Daredevil movie? Is Carnahan the right choice to direct? Will Fox take on the project or let the rights revert?

Comment by Gabriel on August 8, 2012 at 7:55pm Daredevil is a great super-hero and I'd love someone to come up with a darker interpretation for the big screen.

I didn't take the "...we'll f*ck with you" line as a promise, but to be fair, they did f*ck with them. F*cking with someone doesn't mean you come out on top. Additionally, the reason the film cut off at the end - from my understanding - was to illustrate the point that it didn't matter who survived and who was killed. What mattered was that Ottway overcame his fear; learned to let go and truly live. Hence the whole, "Live and die on this day" tidbit.

The Grey was proving to be something damn good, except for the shitty, shitty ending, which ended up ruining the entire movie for me. They didn't deliver on the promise of the survivors dealing with the wolves ("You fuck with us, we'll fuck with you") or how Ottway gave up on hope and dependence on a higher power and said, "Fuck it. I'll do it myself. I'll do it myself." And he didn't. Or at least they didn't show it us, which is bullshit. Terrible ending. And I'm not going to pull the dick move you did by resorting to an ad hom regarding your intelligence, but I will say that I don't like Michael Bay movies, but at least they all have a final resolution and actually deliver on what they promise, which granted isn't much, but at least they do deliver on said promises.
Fuck Joe Carnahan again. His record is not a good one. And if you love his movies, Rick, that is your right and your opinion, but that just means I won't be paying attention to anything you'd recommend.

Comment by PDP on August 8, 2012 at 10:09am Not sure if either Fox or Marvel is ready to deliver on a better interpretation of Daredevil. Don't get me wrong loved the Avengers related flicks and some of the X-men stuff too, but every time they attempt the darker Marvel stuff they always wimp out. (Daredevil, Ghost Rider, the Punisher Movies, Etc) I would like to see grittier (And in some cases spookier) incarnations of DD, Ghost Rider and eventually an awesome Doctor Strange movie. (Like Constantine or Legion in feel, but cooler) Maybe they’re afraid that people won't turn out for something like that?

Comment by Eric Turpel on August 8, 2012 at 2:45am Despite me actually liking the 2003 Daredevil, I do think Joe Carnahan could make his version superior...IF Liam Neeson plays a major character. He's got to be in it.
Comment by DeathNRebirth on August 8, 2012 at 12:20am You know, I think both recommendations of Garrett Hedlund and Joel Edgerton, by Daniel Martin and Shalom, respectively, are great. I would also add that i think Ryan Gosling might be a very interesting choice to play Matt Murdock/Daredevil. After Drive, i totally want to see him in more action movies (preferably one with a slow burn, but incredibly violent and explosive action sequences).
Comment by Daniel Martin on August 7, 2012 at 11:43pm Garrett Helund should be daredevil
