Sylvester Stallone is an interesting guy. He's responsible for both classic action film characters as well as much mocked schlock. When you watch him in something like, say, 'Over the Top' or 'Demolition Man,' your estimation may be that he's dim-witted or generally beef-headed. However, I've heard many an interview with Stallone in which he came off as poised, eloquent, and even insightful. Recently, he turned that insight to the state of the modern action film. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sly voiced his concerns that superheroes are overshadowing the kinds of films that made he and Arnie household names. Here's what he said...
"This genre unfortunately is becoming...let's just say it's fading away. You have the superheroes today which are possessed with all the extraordinary powers; they can blink and a fireball comes out of there. It's great. And then you have a bunch of us which is just your basic male-pattern badness...Kind of like hands-on action. The movie business has worked assiduously to discourage intelligent, discerning people, FROM the theater. They have worked hard to get rid of you, because you don't go and then buy toys and games."
Pretty stern words from Rambo/Rocky/Judge Dredd, but do you agree? Is this half-bitter-half-melancholy rant a realization that 'The Expendables 2' probably won't make as much money as 'The Avengers?' Or perhaps, does Sly have a point? Before superhero films became huge business, my cinematic heroes were guys like Snake Plissken, Indiana Jones, and Han Solo. These weren't guys with powers, other than the heightened ability to be utterly badass. When you look at modern action films, outside of comic book characters, who are our current heroes? How many Jason Statham characters are plastered on the walls of younger action fans? And let's face it, the iconic stars of 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise are the cars; so much so that they've alternated and interchanged cast members and the movies worked just as well commercially. I'm interested to know what your stance is on this issue. Are the macho, superpower-less action heroes a thing of the past? Is the genre in peril? Also, "male-pattern badness?" Awesome!
Sound off, Spillios!

Comment by Jared King on May 29, 2012 at 5:45pm Stallone is right as usual. And he has some authority on this issue being an action God. I'm extremely sick of superhero movies, but their not the only issue. It's the PG-13 rating and CGI. And Arnie and Sly can only go on for so long, being in their mid-60's.
By the way, Commando is the greatest action movies ever made and if you say otherwise you're a communist.
Comment by Joseph E T Hughes on May 29, 2012 at 5:29pm Yeah, he has a point. A large part of why modern action films don't have the quality scripts and funding a movie like The Avengers gets is because nobody wants to finance them when you have safer bets around, like The Avengers. So I can kind of understand his plight - it's hard to reach those former levels of quality when they just don't have the money like they used to.

I take offense to that. Commando IS a classic. A good one.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on May 29, 2012 at 5:15pm Wow, no love for First Blood or Lords of Flatbush huh? Oh well.
Sly is partially right. What's killing/killed traditional action films are the use of CGI and high wire act. Now, anyone can be an action star because the methods in stunts are safer but also way more fake.
Go back to Expendables, Sly was filming the making of it, showing the injuries...and how it threatened to delay the movie, run up the costs...never mind they had to master the fighting scenes virtually over night. Can't expect people like Zoe Saldana in the Losers and to do that. I mean, she'll snap like a twig in that kind of rough housing.

Comment by Richie Vega on May 29, 2012 at 4:32pm They will come again, when we get so used to superheroes that by seeing something mundane we think "whoa! that's different!"
I expect this to happen long before our society turns all Gattaca on us, lest something we haven't envisioned comes instead.
Comment by The All Father on May 29, 2012 at 3:13pm If Expendables 2 dosent make as much as avengers it's because it's not as good not because they don't have super powers

I'm gonna call bullshit on that one. There is a reason why Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are back - especially Diesel. They work well together, and well directed car chases didn't help Black be a character to remember. Torretto, on the other hand, may not be iconic, but is interesting. Same goes for Riddick, although that's from sci-fi action-thriller, so I don't know if that counts. Stallone does have a point, but only because studios try to make classic action flicks dumber and more kid-friendly with their PG-13 bullshit. They shouldn't be slasher-film gore-violent, but they should have blood, swearing and less shaky-cam, cgi, no-blood/cgi-blood crap. And Expendables didn't help, because it was just a weak movie with a weak script, and sequel doesn't look much better than that, so Stallone - if you listen to me, Sly - make a good action flick that feels like the classics. The good ones, not "Commando".
