First Trailer For Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'

If you think back to your high school English class, you may remember a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald which you were forced to read called 'The Great Gatsby.' As it happens, though I too was forced to read it in school, 'The Great Gatsby' is one of my favorite books and I absolutely love the 1974 film version starring Robert Redford. I'm not sure if it's my affinity for the character or the original film that makes me uneasy about this first trailer for Baz Luhrmann's version. In the new film, Leonardo DiCaprio will be playing the tortured titular protagonist with Carey Mulligan playing Daisy (the object of his affection) and Tobey Maguire playing Nick (his only apparent friend). There's something about the way Leo is portraying Gatsby, albeit in brief flashes, that seem out of whack; not quite as poised as Gatsby should be. But again, it's a trailer, it's incredibly difficult to judge. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think.

'The Great Gatsby' hits theaters December 25th

Who here wants a Catcher in the Rye film?

Luhrman's weakness has always been story. I fucking hated Romeo+Juliet, haven't seen Moulin Rouge, and i thought Australia was okay. I've always enjoyed his art direction and this movie's visuals look outstanding, i'd love if he kept the modern soundtrack, and i'm loving the cast.As far as story goes, if he doesn't deviate too far from the source material, it should be decent.

As far as comparisons with Midnight in Paris, judging from the trailer it's pretty clear those two films have different ways of depicting the 1920s. Allen chose to depict the 1920s more by what it actually looked and sounded like (in contrast to modern times). Whereas Luhrman's  depiction is trying to convey what it felt like (trying to make the modern audience feel what the folks in the 1920s felt like). Both methods are valid and it just depends on what going for, clearly Luhrman is trying to make the modern audience feel the decadence and debauchery of the 1920s and you cant pull that off with early Jazz music, you do it through the use of the modern equivalent. You're going for the emotional/psychological authenticity, not historical authenticity.

the thing i am really liking is the artistic expression of the background. so often when you see something in the 20's they try and make it bright but they are restricted trying to make it fit into the old technology restraints and it still comes out all brown. this here seems like they hit the mark sort of taking a steampunk approach using old tech to create a futuristic look, to represent the wonder of the people seeing it for the first time.

basically it was one of the rare times i recognized some design elements and wanted to express my admiration. as for the story and acting leo is good and they seem like they are doing a good thing here. i think we will get a good story and movie.

I don't know if the themes in this film are interesting to a modern audience. Fitzgerald juxtapozed old money/classist society America inherited from Europe vs. emerging young money millionaires born out of the gluttony of the 1920s that emphasized hedonism, celebrity status, and bending the rules of legality. Ultimately leading to prohibition and what he thought was the death of the American dream and entrepreneurship...

Is that relatable to an audience today?

Much like Moulin Rogue, Baz captured the decadence...

Sunscreen has long term benefits against most of Baz's films...

Watched the '74 film in American Lit in high school after reading the book. The only thing I remember from the film is how friggin' weird Daisy was. Cryin' about shirts and shit.
