Next week, Rupert Sanders' fantasy epic 'Snow White and the Huntsman' hits theaters. The Universal Studios production reimagines the classic Snow White fairy tale with a more sinister, battle-hardened edge. Earlier this year, Tarsem Singh and Relativity Media put their own spin on Snow White with 'Mirror, Mirror.' Now, when most people think of Snow White, quite often the first image they conjure up is Disney's classic animated version. Turns out, Disney was also planning on producing its own Snow White retelling: 'The Order of the Seven.' The basic premise was that a group of international warriors was assembled to protect a young woman from her wicked stepmother. The film was set to star Saoirse Ronan ('Hanna') and to be the directorial debut of special effects artist Michael Gracey. Now it seems Disney has put the Asia-based production on the back burner, possibly for good. Concerns over budget, a changing of the guard at the studio head level, and the box office failure of 'John Carter' have caused Disney to change their tune on 'The Order of the Seven,' as all development has been stopped.
I'm conflicted on this. On the one hand, the film was originally set up to be a live-action kung fu version of Snow White, and that sounds amazing! But it seems it devolved into a more generic fantasy/action adventure story, and we need another of those retellings of Snow White like we need another movie based on a board game. I do feel bad for Saoirse Ronan, she was so good in 'Hanna' and it would have been such a boost for her to headline this movie. Not that she's hurting for work, she's actually got several pictures lined up, but still. I think it's interesting how much the underachievement of 'John Carter' at the box office is creating chaos at Disney. It lead to the head of the studio resigning and the DVD/Blu-ray to be released just three months after its theatrical release, something unheard of for a movie of its size. There is still of course the chance that Disney will resurrect 'The Order of the Seven,' as it did with Gore Verbinski's 'The Lone Ranger,' but if the core story isn't at least somewhat intact, I'm not sure I care to see it.
What do you guys think? Are you disappointed Disney pulled the plug on 'The Order of the Seven?' How many more Snow White reimaginings do we need?

I'm just sad to see John Carter be such a flop. I really enjoyed that movie. And I'm depressed to find out that BECAUSE it did so bad, we will not only NEVER see a sequel, but also ANYTHING that's even kinda like JC will get the plug pulled.
"A kung fu version of Snow White? That sounds like something GUYS would like! And we just can't market to men! Remember John Carter? Best stick with what has actually worked for us and made money. CRANK OUT ANOTHER TEEN MUSIC GROUP FROM THE DISNEY CHANNEL!!!!"
John Carter of Mars was by no means a perfect film. It had flaws, but I still liked it a LOT better than ANY of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. And THOSE made money.

Comment by Ratchet on May 23, 2012 at 4:27pm Kung fu fairy tale movie? Sure, why not. Generic fantasy adventure flick? That can die on the grapevine.
Whether I'm disappointed by this depends on the direction they were going with it at the time.
Comment by Klatez on May 23, 2012 at 3:47pm Putting the brakes on The Order of Seven is the least of my worries for Disney. After the complete failure of John Carter, I'm just now scared for the career of Andrew Stanton. Although I could see clear and continuous faults with the movie, I could also see Stantons efforts and passion for the movie, and I want him to be continued to be hired and continue to contribute to great movies.
Comment by Connor D. on May 23, 2012 at 2:16pm When three studios decide to do a project about the exact same character, you KNOW times are bad.
Comment by Jedi Master Dylan on May 23, 2012 at 1:44pm I'm getting tired of all this Snow White stuff. Wasn't even one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid.
With all the money they've made on Avengers, what's to worry about? Go ahead, can't screw up the story any more!
