Remember that 'Daredevil' movie with Ben Affleck? It was not so bueno. However, in the wake of the continued box office draw of Marvel's many characters, Fox is planning a reboot of the blind lawyer-turned-vigilante. As of now, this reboot is set to be directed by David Slade ('30 Days of Night,' 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'). Recently, the studio moved the project a step further toward reality by hiring newcomer David James Kelly to rewrite the existing script. Kelly will be taking over for Brad Kane ('Fringe') who was originally brought aboard to pen the script. Rumor has it that the new Daredevil movie will be based on the 'Born Again' story arc by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in which the Kingpin discovers Daredevil's true identity. No word yet on when the new Daredevil film is due out.
I'm not going to argue that 2003's 'Daredevil' was good, mostly because my eyes are functioning, but I like the character quite a bit and would love to see a decent film adaptation. Knowing only the tiniest bit about the 'Born Again' storyline, I'm glad to see it will be the basis of the new film. However, and with no disrespect intended to Mr. Kelly, I can't help but feel like there's been a step down at the writing position here. Kelly has never been credited with a single screenplay, and yet he's being brought in to rewrite a script by 'Fringe's Brad Kane? It seems ill-advised at best. I also have mixed feelings about Slade as the director for this project. Sure, I had fun with '30 Days of Night,' and 'Hard Candy' is a staggeringly effective film, but the words 'The Twilight Saga' on his resume are enough to give pause to my enthusiasm for this reboot. Of course, once they announce who will be playing Matt Murdoch, the conversation of who's rewriting the reboot will be overshadowed.
What do you guys think? Does this screenwriter changeover concern you? Do you believe Slade, as director, can pull this off?

Comment by Dr.DeadVortex on April 30, 2012 at 1:30pm @Dilster3000 what makes you think that this will rip off the dark knight?
Comment by TheMantaBluRay on April 30, 2012 at 1:28pm Daredevil hasn’t aged very well and I liked it when I first saw it as a kid. I felt that it got too depressing for its own good and the cheesy humor only devalued the film further.
Since Marvel Studios is apparently not making the reboot, 20th Century Fox and whoever is involved better make a damn good Daredevil movie. Especially due to the high praise I often hear about the Daredevil comics.
Comment by Dilster3000 on April 30, 2012 at 1:11pm I smell a Dark Knight style rip-off.
Comment by moviedork on April 30, 2012 at 12:31pm Say what you will about Twilight, but Slade gave Twilight life that the franchise never had, or will have again.
Hey at least Slade tried to make something halfway decent with Twilight, and I still liked 30 Days of Night enough to give him a pass for directing the Twilight movie.
As for the writer, as with anything, it's a big wait and see. Hopefully he won't bomb it.
Comment by Paul William Gregory on April 30, 2012 at 12:25pm I personally would have preferred it if Ben Affleck was the one to direct it.
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on April 30, 2012 at 12:09pm I've only read Ed Brubaker's run on Daredevil so I can't say much about the Born Again arc. Yet I do have a lot invested in this franchise and would be among the group of pissed off fan-boys if they fuck up Daredevil again.
Comment by Charmingman93 on April 30, 2012 at 12:06pm Well we'll have to wait and see, this writer could turn out to be one of the best, or he could end up not being one of the best... the director though...I can't see this being good at all with him at the helm.

Comment by James on April 30, 2012 at 12:04pm Although I don't like "Born Again" as much in comparison with the rest of Frank Miller's Daredevil work, I think it will work great (possibly even better) on film.
