Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the theater, well frankly you were just being naive. People still talk and text during the movie and Hollywood still makes some ol' garbage. Hey, speaking of, long ago and far away, it was announced that we were on track to get a fifth installment of the 'Scary Movie' franchise, around about the same time that 'Scream 4' was due out. However, the project had remained dormant long enough as to allow the glimmer of hope that maybe this was just in fact a rumor. And then a few days ago they went and hired Malcolm Lee ('Undercover Brother') to direct it, so it seems this really is happening. In addition to helming the film, Lee will co-write 'Scary Movie 5' with David Zucker (who directed 'Scary Movie 3' and 'Scary Movie 4'). Few details are known about the plot, nor when shooting is scheduled to begin.
If it's not evident already, I am not a big fan of the 'Scary Movie' franchise. To be completely fair, there were a few jokes in the first movie that had me giggling, but that was back when it was, you know, actually making fun of horror movies. As the series progressed, it just became this amorphous dumping ground for all current movies and pop culture references and whatever other desperate attempts at remaining relevant they could find. However, I am fully aware that we would not even be talking about 'Scary Movie 5' if there wasn't still an audience. I've never actually seen a single film in Malcolm Lee's catalog, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, which fits because I have nothing but doubt about this project. I'm going to hope against hope that there will be at least as many found-footage jokes as there are 'Jersey Shore' and 'The Voice' mocks.
Am I being too harsh? Are there any die hard 'Scary Movie' fans out there who could see this working? Is Malcolm Lee a good choice to direct?

Comment by Ocramed on April 27, 2012 at 1:41pm My only problem with your assessment is that you are mixing the Scary Movie franchise with the parody films that were made infamous by the Friedberg-Seltzer team. Also, the first two films were done by the Wayan Brothers, while the last two were done by David Zucker. Ergo, I am giving this new outing a chance, especially if Anna Faris returns to star.
Comment by william clark on April 27, 2012 at 1:36pm I actually really like the first two movies...they were funny as hell to me.
undercover brother is awesome,so i give this a chance
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on April 27, 2012 at 12:07pm Honestly, you should check out Undercover Brother, because it was a hilarious parody of blaxplotation films.
Comment by Angel_A on April 27, 2012 at 11:29am I've got a big soft spot for Scary Movie 2. David Cross as the overly independant disabled guy and Chris Elliot as the creepy ass servent were hilarious!
Comment by The Gaming King on April 27, 2012 at 11:28am Undercover Brother is my favourite comedy of all time. Therefore, I'm a LIIIITLE interested in seeing what he does.
Comment by TheMantaBluRay on April 27, 2012 at 11:17am Scary Movie is one of those films I used to like as a kid but looking back the jokes do not hold up very well. Scream was already a parody of Horror films as well as the recent Cabin in the Woods. Scary Movie and its sequels have nothing to offer nowadays.
Comment by Vermithrax Pejorative on April 27, 2012 at 11:12am The first one I originally thought was good for its worth. Loved Shorty being a dumbass and the goofy parts with Ghostface. The sexual jokes I thought were too strong and disgusting. Then it suffered sequelitis...
The second came out...it was stupid. The third and fourth came out and both were mediocre and not enough punch like the first one. Then I re-watched the first one again and...it was ok. Not as good as I remembered it, but there a few jokes I still chuckled at. A fifth one though? With the amount of spin-offs and sequels, its going to be about as special as the shit in my toliet.
Comment by The Dubya on April 27, 2012 at 10:50am These movies gave the Seltzerbergs an opportunity to operate a camera and plague the cinema world with their horrendous torture devices they disguise as movies.
And that is just unforgivable.
The Scary Movie franchise can burn for being the enabler of those two.
