As Lionsgate struggles to count all of its money from last month's release of 'The Hunger Games,' it appears the next installment, 'Catching Fire,' will experience a changing of the guard at director. Despite the fact that Lionsgate and Fox recently made nice and put together a schedule that would allow Jennifer Lawrence to star in sequels to both 'X-Men: First Class' and 'The Hunger Games,' it's been reported today that Gary Ross will not be returning to helm the further cinematic adventures of Katniss Everdeen. Ross, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the first installment, was said to have been in pretty intense negotiations with Lionsgate earlier this week over his salary and has now officially given his notice to the studio. 'Catching Fire' is set to begin shooting this coming fall.
What does this mean for the future of the series? Very little. 'Catching Fire' is still very much happening, and probably won't be delayed one iota by Ross' exit. That's not to marginalize the work he did on 'The Hunger Games,' he did a fantastic job, but when faced with a cash cow like this, Lionsgate is not going to let any setback derail the next movie. The good news here is that, while Ross certainly excelled during his time in the director's chair, it's not as if he left such an indelible mark on this franchise that no other filmmaker could step in. The source material still exists, Jennifer Lawrence is coming back, and it will be interesting to see how the overall visual aesthetic of the next film may change under a new director. For example, when Chris Columbus left the Harry Potter series after two movies, it allowed for Alfonso Cuaron to take over 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' which is still my favorite of the franchise. So now the question becomes, who will step in and take over for Ross?
Who would you guys like to see helming the next 'Hunger Games' movie?

Comment by Blake Neyomanasi on April 6, 2012 at 7:34pm Speaking of Alfonso Cuaron, I think he'd be a great choice for the next movie. He's already had experience in YA literature with Harry Potter and the post-apocalyptic genre with Children of Men. He's my top director for the project (though I realize he probably won't do it since he's working on Gravity).
thank god...fuck the 1st film and fuck that director. Now its time to hopefully see a new better director step-up to the plate!
Comment by Caleb Kahn on April 6, 2012 at 5:36pm As much as I loved the first film, it will be interesting to see who will make the next two to three films. It would be wise to go the Harry Potter route and have different directors handle the different adaptations and even though I don't know what happens in the next two books, I do have a bunch of directors that would make interesting choices to direct Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Steven Soderbergh's already served as a second unit director on The Hunger Games so he would be one of the more logical choices to make in terms of consistency. Danny Boyle, like Gary Ross, is a director who likes to change his game quite a bit so he would lend an interesting take on the further exploration of the world of Panem. If Ridley Scott wasn't so busy with so many other projects, I think that he would bring some epic scope to the universe that they've set up. I also think that the Hughes brothers, Joe Carnahan, Kevin Macdonald, Gavin O'Connor, and Nicolas Winding Refn would be great candidates to consider. If any one of those guys get chosen to do either Catching Fire or Mockingjay, I'll be there front and centre.

Comment by Christian Bergman Jr. on April 6, 2012 at 4:21pm Yeah, that would be nice, to see different directors having a go.
Comment by Majin B-mag on April 6, 2012 at 4:11pm Gary Ross did good work on Hunger Games.
for Catching Fire? ...I'd like to see Martin Campbell direct it in the same way he directed Casino Royale.
Comment by Christopher Chemshahans on April 6, 2012 at 4:05pm Nicholas Winding Refn really could give it an awesome spin :D
Comment by MahMahAfro on April 6, 2012 at 3:58pm They should replace him with somebody who realises that 90 minutes worth of ideas should result in a 90 minutes movie, not a 140 minute one - just saw this overhyped juggernaut and my ass still hurts. Obviously my buns aren't as durable as the 15 year old girls this movie is aimed at.
Also wouldn't hurt to have somebody who, if they're gonna co-write, can write decent dialogue, and somebody who can make the other characters beside Everdeen something other than 1 dimensional cut-outs.
Comment by Mister Steel on April 6, 2012 at 2:39pm Maybe with this dude gone the second one won't be atrocious like the first. Maybe I'll even be able to see what the hell is going on in at least one of the action scenes this time.
Comment by Amia on April 6, 2012 at 1:29pm Nicholas Winding Refn. (I don't know, I'm just throwing names out there. As long as the director sticks to the book, I'm cool with it.)
