When it was announced that Paramount, under director Jonathan Liebesman ('Battle: L.A.'), was rebooting the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,' it didn't raise too many eyebrows. Even fans had to acknowledge that we were past due for a reboot. However, the partnership struck with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes had some of us a little uneasy. Recently, during a Nickelodeon event, Bay spoke about his designs for the new 'TMNT' movie. One particular comment he made is causing a bit of an angry stir among die hard fans. Listen to the brief clip below and see if anything strikes you as odd.

Michael Bay talks Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by stuffwelike

I'm sorry..."aliens?" While the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, the cartoon series, and the the innumerable toys were all a big part of my childhood, I don't consider myself an unreasonable fanboy. I'm fine with as many remakes and reboots they want to do. My big question however is, why make this change? Is the canon of these four mutated amphibians with martial arts training not genre-crazy already without the inclusion of extraterrestrial tropes? To me, this speaks to the overall problem with Michael Bay. The man is so obsessed with doing everything bigger and flashier that he doesn't really consider whether his choices are necessary. But perhaps I am too close to the material and this change will benefit the film.

What do you guys think? Can this alien twist work for TMNT? If so, how?
