Is it just me or are there a truckload of Dracula movies in the works? It seems like you can't throw a wooden stake anymore without hitting another film about the classic bloodsucker in development. Sony, not wishing fall to the rear of the Drac pack, has just purchased a pitch from screenwriter Jason Keller ('Mirror Mirror,' 'Machine Gun Preacher') that is apparently a gothic origin story of the Dracula mythos. This as yet untitled film joins the ranks of existing projects like 'Dracula Year Zero', directed by newcomer Gary Shore who took over for Alex Proyas, Warner Brother's 'Harker' (the reimagining of Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula' currently trying to net Russell Crowe as its star), and we've even got Dario Argento's 'Dracula 3D' coming out this year! Keller is also writing another, more modern vampire film based on Justin Cronin's novel 'The Passage;' the film adaptation will be directed by 'Cloverfield's Matt Reeves.
So yeah, if you weren't sick of vampires before 'Twilight,' get ready for the next bold wave of over-saturation. I will say that at least we're getting a tidal wave of vampire movies featuring real vampires, which I will gladly take over a flood of new "supernatural teen romance" titles featuring glittery impostors. Jason Keller already has me intrigued as he is the guy who rewrote the script for the upcoming Sylvester Stallone/Arnold Schwarzenegger actioner 'The Tomb.' He's also written the script for a film called 'Go Like Hell' about the battle between Ford and Ferrari to be the king of muscle cars. Michael Mann is rumored to be directing that one. However, I feel like I need a bit more info than the vague description currently available for Keller's Dracula origin story, because as it stands it doesn't sound all that different from 'Dracula Year Zero.' If all these various Dracula films at least have their own voice and approach, I can forgive the sheer number of them hitting at roughly the exact same time. But if Sony brought on Keller just to piggyback on 'Dracula Year Zero' and create another box office arms race with two similar films about one character, a la the Snow White situation in which Keller finds himself with 'Mirror Mirror,' that's going to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
What do you guys think, could Keller's Dracula concept work? Are there too many Drac flicks looming?

Vampires, the new zombies....I'm tired of good ideas being beat to death....we've got 2 Snow White movies coming too!
Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on February 28, 2012 at 3:57am Screen writer looks unreliable when it comes to scripts, I do want to see if anyone will do the hellsing (the anime/manga) origin where at his supposed execution, he gains power from his dead allies. As you said, the concept is also being adapted by other people so it might be just another box office race, without many details I don't know if it will work but it has a chance.
Dracula 3D may spoil the meal before anyone takes a bite as from the photos I seen, while it's period accurate it looks a bit cheesy. if the others get off the ground it's gonna be a 2 is company 3 is a crowd thing where they're gonna start cutting into each others box office, especially if all are released closely in the same even 2 year span and people most likely will get fatigue of Dracula films.
If some of these projects drop off, that would be for the best and depending on Mirror, Mirror and especially the passage, my opinion on if this one should be one of them that should dropped might change..
