If it's crap ... We'll tell you

MTV quoted Marvel's editor in chief Joe Quesada saying that the chances for an Avengers movie are pretty astronomical. They have since cleared it up. He was talking about a Marvel team-up movie like say Spiderman/Daredevil and such. The Avengers movie at this point in time is at the stage where they hired a writer (Zak Penn) but that's pretty much it. Let's say that the JLA movie is further along since they have a script, a director and they're in the casting process (without any luck though since they have been turned down so far).

Even though I'm not by any means an Avengers fan, even though the script is going to be written by Zak Penn (who did Elektra and Inspector Gadget, among other things) I STILL say that an Avengers movie is far more likely to be good, than a JLA movie and here's why:

1. Less is more
The Avengers don't operate on the same scope as the JLA. The JLA are gods in their own right, and they fight Gods. Kyle Rayner freakin held a bajillion planets in place in the TPB Heaven's ladder. And I'm not even going to go into Pre-Crisis Superman stuff. The Avengers are mostly regular humans, with some enhancements. Captain America, regular joe. Iron Man, regular joe with nifty armor. Ant-man - regular joe who can change his size. Quicksilver - regular Joe who can run fast and so on and so forth. The only REAL powerhouses in the team are Thor and let's say Scarlet Witch.

Thus, it will be much easier to translate their adventures to the big screen because they don't have to make the most fantabulous epic there ever was. They don't have to challenge the Gods. They can focus on characterization because suposedly, that's what makes Marvel so great.

2. No attention whores
I guarantee... GUARANTEE that a JLA movie will in fact be a Batman and his Superfriends movie. WB knows who the cash cow is and it certainly isn't The Atom. We have no such attention hoggers in The Avengers, most of the characters are pretty much at the same level of popularity (I guess Captain America and Iron Man are more popular, but nowhere near Batman's or even Wolverine's level). As such, the movie can let each character shine individually, without one hogging the spotlight.

3. Can't afford to screw up the characters

Marvel is making its own movies with its own characters. It can't afford to screw this up. For one thing, they are just beginning to break into the movie business. And then, they own the characters! They have a responsability to their fans, much greater than WB's or Sony's. They don't care if they screw up a Superhero's personality, as long as they make money off of it. But the people who buy Marvel comics are the people they ABSOLUTELY have to please. Not just a part of the public. They are THE public.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I am actually more excited about the Avengers than I am about the JLA.

Recently, on LDT, Korey expressed feelings about leaving Spill. He said that he had felt this way before and this feeling is now more serious than before. My hope is that this group will show Korey how much we appreciate him and what he does for us.
