It was just under two years ago that people started to complain about No Country For Old Men's lack of an ending. It was also around that time that I started to pull my hair out in frustration for people's stubborn-ness when they're wrong. Of course No Country For Old Men has an ending! It's right here!
I'm not saying there's no reason to complain. There is. Three quarters of the way through the film, a major development takes place off-screen (heard but not seen), and… Continue
If you've read any of the reviews that I post on the threads, then you've most likely noticed that they're all written in a very rigid style, divided up into sections. I've found this method less and less creatively satisfying lately, and I'm going to try to stick to more straightforward reviews from now on. This leads to the dilemma of how to break myself from that style, which has been a crutch of mine for too long.
For this reason, and at the request of some fellow Spill members, I will emba… Continue

I'm a sap when it comes to movies. While watching Up, I cried like a baby. Twice. This happens more often than I'd like to admit.
More often than not, it's a rewarding experience, cathartic because it causes us to reflect upon ourselves or the world around us. In some extreme cases (i.e. Requiem For A Dr… Continue
So I'm visiting my parents for a few weeks before moving to Philadelphia. Kentucky is a boring place, and I must do something to pass the time. Therefore, here are my top five favorite scenes in film history.
As a ground rule, I am only allowing myself one scene per film so the list won't be lopsided. I'm also only considering clips which make an impression when isolated from their original context. This way, I won't have to write a huge rant about the background of a particular film for each c… Continue
While 2008 featured two or three films that were completely ahead of the curve, most of the films this year ranged from adequate to disappointing. Even most of the great ones were held back by one drawback or another. 2009 looks to be even worse, but I'm eagerly anticipating the pleasant surprises that await in unassuming blockbusters and behind the doors which only the true believers bother to seek out.
Here were the best of the year.

By what gravity brings to the ground?
I may end up giving a few posts to this movie, perhaps even solely this sequence. Continue

Last week my friend introduced me to the work of graffiti artist Banksy. I've immediately become obsessed with his stuff, which has given me a new appreciation for still imagery art in general. Therefore, this snap from the animated film Persepolis seemed like a logical starting… Continue
Man, what an awesome night this was! Slightly smaller turnout than usual, which was cool because it meant that no one had to sit on the floor, and there was no heckling of the films. I was worried that the festival would run long, especially given some of the entries in the Alternative category ran close to 20 minutes, but it moved along at a brisk pace, and everyone seemed to keep their enthusiasm throughout the entire duration.
Much of this was due to the absurdly high quality of nearly all t… Continue
