Sploich Reviews Underworld (2003)

In a war between vampires and lycans (werewolves), Selene (Kate Beckinsale) has always fought on the side of her vampire brethren. But after meeting Michael (Scott Speedman), a human who has recently been bitten by a werewolf, she begins to wonder which side she really wants to fight for.

I've avoided these movies for a very long time now because they just haven't looked all that interesting to me. I love vampires…

Sploich Reviews Dark Shadows (2012)

In the late 1700s, wealthy businessman Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) is turned into a vampire and his family cursed by a witch (Eva Green) until Barnabas learns to love her. He is buried and then unearthed in 1972 and must adjust to life in the new century while rebuilding his family name.

I don't feel like I'm in a minority when I say that I've never seen the original Dark Shadows soap opera upon which this movie…

Sploich Reviews Scream (1996)

Even if you've never seen a slasher in your life, you know the formula. They're so overplayed that just about anybody could make one, and it's usually the first type of movie a filmmaker sets out to make. Enter director Wes Craven, who made his name creating one of the most prominent horror franchises of all time with A Nightmare on Elm Street. In the 90s he got the bright idea to make a pseudo-parody of the slasher genre,…

Sploich Reviews Batman & Robin (1997)

Batman comes back for a quadrilogy, this time played by George Clooney as he battles Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman). But as these new threats arise, so does one at home as Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred (Michael Gough) becomes ill. It's up to the Caped Crusader, Robin (Chris O'Donnell) and Alfred's niece Barbara (Alicia Silverstone) to stop the villains and try to find a cure for their…

Sploich Reviews Batman Forever (1995)

Batman (Val Kilmer returns, again, this time to fight Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones and Riddler (Jim Carrey). They've come up with a plan to steal the thoughts of everyone in Gotham and to find out who the man is behind the bat cowl. But this isn't the only problem for Bruce Wayne has taken in Dick Grayson (Chris O'Donnell), a boy who lost his parents in a horrible accident, and his identities begin to clash.

This movie…

Sploich Reviews Batman Returns (1992)

Batman (Michael Keaton) returns indeed, and just in time too because a new threat has surfaced. A malformed man known as Penguin (Danny DeVito) has risen from the sewers of Gotham and has plans to take over the city to avenge the way it has treated him. With this also comes Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), better known as Catwoman, as she becomes another road block in both Batman and Bruce Wayne's lives.

It's funny…

Sploich Reviews Batman (1989)

This movie means a lot to me. Batman is actually the movie that got me interested in film, way back in 2003. It's the first movie where upon watching it my jaw dropped and I had to find out who had directed it. Upon watching it again now and setting aside nostalgia, I really can't say that it's as great as I once though. Or, for that matter, that it's even a good movie at all.

The story introduces Bruce Wayne…

Sploich Reviews Alice in Wonderland (2010)

We all know the story of Alice in Wonderland, but this isn't that story. This is the story of what happened many years after that. When doing a sequel to such an established work, it would really work better if it kept the same tone and got its facts straight. And even if this movie was more faithful to the original stories, it's still far too boring to matter.

Alice (Mia Wasikowska) has stumbled back into Underland…

Sploich Reviews Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece of musical theater, mixing high drama and terrifying situations with some of the darkest comedy you'll get anywhere. It stands to reason that this sort of thing should be adapted to the screen by somebody like director Tim Burton, and he did a marvelous job at it. A lot of things had to be changed to make it work as a modern-day musical, but the changes work and the things that aren't changed…

Sploich Reviews Corpse Bride (2005)

Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp) and Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson) have been betrothed to wed as a business partnership between their parents. But after Victor screws things up at the rehearsal, he finds himself in the woods accidentally proposing to a corpse (Helena Bonham Carter). He must then find a way to set things right with the help of the dead.

This is not a very memorable movie. It does pretty much…

Sploich Reviews Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Although Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a newer adaptation of a work that had previously been adapted into a film that is famous in its own right, I don't feel like you can compare the two. I only start with this because when this film came out that's pretty much all anybody did was compare them, but I feel like they're different enough with different angles on the story. That being said, I find Charlie and the…

Sploich Reviews Big Fish (2003)

Big Fish tells the story of Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor/Albert Finney), a man on his death bed who through his life has told some amazing tales of adventure, romance, horror and suspense. His son William (Billy Crudup) comes to see him in his dying days to learn the truth behind his outlandish tales. But what Will doesn't understand is that his father's stories are more than just fabrications, and he struggles to…

Sploich Reviews Sleepy Hollow (1999)

As director Tim Burton's first foray into horror, a genre seemed best suited for him, Sleepy Hollow is not a disappointment exactly, but it's not really all that interesting. I like conspiracy, supernatural mysteries and stylized gore in my movies, but there's just something missing from this film to make it stand out in my mind.

Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is a constable sent to a small town in late 19th century…

Sploich Reviews Mars Attacks! (1996)

Mars Attacks is a very fun movie, starting out pretty slow but building into an enjoyable climax. It's silly and nostalgic, but most of all it doesn't take itself seriously for a moment and that's what really works about it.

After the government confirms life on Mars, the martians decide to land on Earth in an all-out invasion, killing anybody who gets in their way or looks at them funny. It has an all-star cast…

Sploich Reviews The Avengers (2012)

It's been five years in the making and it's finally here: The Avengers. It was a daunting task to say the least, to bring together some of the most iconic superheroes in one franchise, but they succeeded. And by "succeeded," I mean they did in fact make all of those movies. Unfortunately they gave the payoff to somebody completely unrelated to the project and let him do what he normally does, which in my opinion is waste…

Sploich Reviews Ed Wood (1994)

It's been several decades since his death, but Edward D. Wood Jr. is still considered one of if not the worst director in the history of film. Not many people however consider the frustration and sheer will-power he put into every one of his films. His love of storytelling drove him through the good times and the bad, and he had plenty of bad. This biopic stands as a celebration of not only his compassion but the very…

Sploich Reviews Edward Scissorhands (1990)

From the mind of Tim Burton, another gem comes. This time it's much more personal and much less a comedy. The idea is truly original, nobody can really argue with that, but I don't feel like the execution is very well taken care of, nor am I sure that I was necessary at all.

Edward (Johnny Depp) has lived alone in a mansion on a hill for who knows how long when a woman named Peg (Dianne Wiest) comes along and…

Sploich Reviews Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice was the second outing for director Tim Burton, and here they allowed him much more freedom to do what he wanted to do. It proved to be a great idea because the result was a very amusing and very offbeat comedy about some very dark subjects.

Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) have recently died in an accident and are not sure how to deal with the new family that bought their home. They…

Sploich Reviews Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

It's hard to describe Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens). He's the original man-child, before it was overplayed and annoying. In his first movie, his prized bicycle is stolen by his rival Francis (Mark Holton) and he must travel the United States to find it. It's a hilarious adventure that everyone can enjoy.

Paul Reubens created in Pee-wee a character that is relatable on levels you wouldn't have expected. He is in…
