It looks like I'll be having a happy Thanksgiving after all (although it's not really celebrated in Japan) My blueray copy of Up just came in the mail today! Continue

Hollywood Really Hates Me

I passed by a movie theater today and checked out the posters. It looks like they've got a really interesting new movie showing that managed to slip under my radar. It's a western featuring the awesome talents of such veteran actors like Russel Crowe and Christian Bale and it's called... Ummmm... something to do with the time and some destination.... What was it again? Oh yeah: Three Ten to Yuma No wonder I haven't seen this movie released on DVD yet. I thought I had missed it and was waiting… Continue

Hollywood hates me?

District 9 looks so cool... I say "looks so cool" because I haven't seen it yet. And I doubt I will get to see it for at least 3 months. Possibly an entire year. In other news, Taken will hit the screens in Japan this weekend... I FINALLY get to see Liam Neeson kick some ass. Continue

Sometimes, People Aren't Always Scum...

So, Bolt finally hit the theaters in Japan (nearly an entire year after the US release) and I went to go see it the other day. While I was at the theater waiting for them to open the doors, I made a visit to the men's room to expunge an uncomfortable sandwich I had consumed for lunch. 5 minutes after leaving the bathroom, I came to the realization that the familiar weight of my wallet on my right butt cheek was no longer there. Sensing a moment of panic, I rushed back to the facilities to the st… Continue

Emma Watson Not Dead In Car Crash... What a Dick Move...

From the website: Hollywood Dame

"It seems that over the past 24 hours, the internet has become a frenzy of rumors that “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson died in a car accident. This rumor is, as usual, simply unture. Emma is alive and, from what we hear, well. Here is the report made… Continue

You've gotta make your own kind of music, sing your own special song~♪

A while ago I expressed my annoyance/rage at the fact that the Japanese versions of series DVDs tend to have half as many episodes per DVD, thus forcing Japanese viewers to pay twice as much as our American counterparts for the same amount of viewing pleasure. Well, I recently discovered that with Blueray, Japan and the US share the same global region, unlike DVD. (With DVD, the US is region 1, Japan is region 2. For Blueray, Both the US and Japan are region 1) Now not only could I import and w… Continue

Stop Trying To Be Funny, Michael!

We're big on revenge

My Tansformers Revenge of the Fallen review My Spill Rating: Matinee Warning! This review contains spoilers! I get the feeling that a long time ago, someone walked up to a young budding director named Michael Bay and said to him, “You kno… Continue

Ponyo Review

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

My Spill rating: Matinee Let me start this review by saying I love Hayao Miyazaki films. Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostoro is the most complete perfect animation movie I have ever seen. (Yes, you die-hard anime otaku, it’s bet… Continue

GOEMON review

I went and saw the movie GOEMON yesterday. This was a movie that had captured my interest because the director was the guy who did Casshern which is one of my all-time favorite movies and also I liked some of the cast.
Plot summary: The year is 1582. For the first time since the da… Continue

Gifts That Keep Giving

Today, a friend gave me a Wii. Needless to say, I was totally floored. I had mentioned in passing a while ago that I was hoping to get a Wii, eventually. Well, today, my friend handed me a large bag and said "Happy Birthday." This was an entirely new experience for me. Usually I am the one giving gifts. I have had the good fortune at times to be in a position to be able to give somewhat extravagant gifts to people. I always say that there is no better feeling than knowing a gift is truly apprec… Continue

Every now and then...

It's kind of hard to get back on track after doing a series of blog posts geeking out about Final Fantasy. To be honest, I haven't really had much to geek out about recently. I got to see Slumdog Millionare the other day, but at this point, I'm probably the last person to get to see it. So, life has been fairly stagnant lately with business as usual. With all the talk on the political sphere about the economic crisis and everyone going through hard times, watching the news from overseas has been… Continue

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Review (The Actual Demo)

I went out yesterday picked up my copy of Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Complete blueray edition.

First off, the movie was a lot of fun. The creators were able to go back and fix a lot of what didn't work with the original while upgrading some of the old effects as well. Definitely wort… Continue

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Review Part 5

This blog post is way too long... Part 5: The Final Fantasy Series This blog entry is just a brief synopsis on all 13 FFs released to date. I won’t be covering Tactics or Crystal Chronicles because I’ve never played them and know literally nothing about their content. Oh yeah, and there will be spoilers. Final Fantasy The first Final Fantasy game. The system ripped off was roughly based on Dragon Quest. Both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were new types of RPGs, the genre being dominated up… Continue

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Review Part 4

This'll be a short one. Only one more and I'll get to the actual review. Part 4: Square Enix and the Future After consecutive fiscal losses despite the release of hits like Final Fantasy 10 and Kingdom Hearts, in 2003 Square merged with long-time rival Enix, creator of the highly popular Dragon Quest series (the original on the NES being the inspiration for the original Final Fantasy) to form Square Enix. The merger was met with mixed responses. Some thought this would be a huge step for RPGs… Continue

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Review Part 3

Part 3: The Fall Now, enough with the ass-kissery of Square, let’s get down to the meat and bones part which everyone loves in a good success story: The Fall from Grace. It could be said that Square got over ambitious, they got too big for their britches, or they just plain fucked up. I like to think of them as a hen that lays golden eggs almost killing itself trying to pass a bowling ball made of lead. The bowling ball? The Final Fantasy Movie. After the success of Final Fantasy 7, Square bec… Continue

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Review Part Deus

And now, for the further adventures of Square. Part 2: The Golden Age With the introduction of the Super NES, video games now had a bigger playground in which to set up their toys. Graphics took a leap forward and gameplay became more complex. With this leap in technology, Square introduced games that were more than the just the simple “You are warrior. Enter the dungeon. Kill the boss” straight forward sort of RPG. Even since the original NES, Square had begun creating more plot driven games,… Continue

A Test of Faith

So after hearing much of the Spill Crew rave about Frost Nixon and the amazing acting that Frank Langella pulls off in the podcasts from LAST DECEMBER, the movie has finally hit the screens here in Japan. I can understand how the topic of American history makes the movie a less-than-mass-public-appealing film, lowering its priority of screenings and demand from theaters. As such, none of my local theaters was featuring it, leaving me to have to do a google search for any theaters in my su… Continue

Somebody Owes Me Big For This...

A long time ago, back in 1984, a Japanese manga writer began writing a series that would one day engulf the world. There are many rumors and speculations about how the series was started. It is said that after writing one series, the author ran out of ideas and wanted to start anew. It is said that after the success and newfound wealth that came with it from his first series, the author managed to get himself so deeply in debt that he put all his hopes in a new series hoping that it would be suc… Continue
