The Lovely Bones review

The (not so) Lovely Bones is based on a 2002 novel of the same name, and it's about a girl named Susie Salmon, played by Saoirse Ronan, who is murdered by a seemingly normal neighbor of hers, Mr. Harvey, played by Stanley Tucci. Her remains are never found, but she is presumed dead. Now, from this point on, most people would expect the movie to be about Susie's family trying to find the person who murdered her. And it is...but only sort… Continue

The Book of Eli review

Sigh... I was really disappointed by this movie. I didn't expect much going in — I hardly even knew what the movie was about. But as it progressed, I got hope, thinking that maybe, just maybe, this movie could accomplish something spectacular. Unfortunately, it never did. But hey, it's January, and almost every movie is like this. Most of them look cool and interesting, but end up either being mediocre or just plain bad. The Book of Eli's not bad, but… Continue

Youth in Revolt review

Sometimes a movie will come along that's hard to pin down, much like this one. The trailers sell it as a potentially raunchy, run-of-the-mill teen sex comedy with an interesting hook. But it's not as Hollywood as it would seem. For one thing, it stars Michael Cera, who, while he is a fairly big-name actor, generally stars in indie movies, like Juno and Paper Heart, which might make some people think this is more of an indie flick than a big budget… Continue

A Triple Review of Horror Movies: [Rec], Troll 2, and The Thing

I'm not quite sure how it happened, seeing as horror is one of my least favorite movie genres, but I somehow randomly found myself watching three different horror movies this week. Those movies were Spanish cult classic [Rec], the ultimate so-bad-it's-good movie Troll 2, and John Carpenter's classic remake, The Thing. [Rec] and The Thing are both near the top of the list as far as widely loved and praised horror movies are concerned. Troll 2, however, is the on the opposite end of the spectrum.… Continue

My Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2010

It's 2010, a year full of endless possibilities, and hopefully some great movies too. But which are the ones that I'm truly excited for? The one's that I'm going to rush out to theaters to see? Well, here's my list of my ten most anticipated movies of the upcoming year.

10) Despicable Me (July 9)

I think it's those two magical words that have drawn me in — Steve Carell. Carell plays the main character in this movie, who has only been… Continue

The Messenger

The Messenger? More like The Meh-senger. Okay, now that I've fulfilled my quota of one bad pun per blog post, I can get on with this review.

The Messenger is focused on two soldiers in the Army who are casualty notification officers, which means that they're the two soldiers you always see telling people that their family members have died in movies. In this movie, rather than following the families, the movie focuses on the soldiers… Continue

District 9 is Better Than Sex AND better than The Dark Knight (gasp!)

District 9 Review

If there’s one thing this movie can teach to the likes of Michael Bay and Stephen Sommers, it’s that it is humanly possible to make a sci-fi/action movie with tons of great effects and CGI for only 30 million dollars. That’s the budget of this movie, and it certainly doesn’t show. This movie has some of the best integrated CGI I’ve ever seen in a movie. Oh, and one other thing. The rest of the movie rocks, too.

This is the best summer blockbuster since… Continue

My Thoughts on the Upcoming Tintin Movie

When I heard that a Tintin movie was in the works, I was ecstatically happy. Tintin is a great comic book series full of action, adventure, great stories and great characters, and it seems like the books could be very easily translated into movies.

For those of you who don't know, the Belgian comic books feature Tintin, a young reporter who travels the world with his dog, Snowy. Along the way, he meets all sorts of crazy characters like Captain Haddock, Dr. Calculus, and Thompson and… Continue

Evan Spiliotopoulos to Write "Wanted 2": My Reponse

Spill has already posted the story on their front page, but for those of you who missed it, Evan Spiliotopoulos has been chosen as the writer for the second "Wanted" movie. First of all, that must have sucked for Evan S., as we'll call him, when he was a kid, because that is just a name that kids would laugh to no end at and constantly poke fun at.

But here's where things get really fucked up. "Wanted" was an R-rated action movie with all sorts of objectionable,… Continue

Zack's Top 11 Movies from his Childhood

My childhood was dominated mainly by animated movies and silly, ridiculous comedies that only a kid a could love. It's been a while since I've seen most of these, but being fairly smarter than I was back then, I think I can discern the good films from the bad. So I gauged this list on how good the movies really are, how much I liked them back in the day, and how many times I watched them. I rewatched many of these movies repeatedly as a kid, and never got tired of some of em. I'm still a… Continue

My Review of Watchmen

I went to go see Watchmen on opening night, and so here is my review of one of the most anticipated movies of the year...that will more than likely be forgotten by mid-June. Because while I really dug it, a lot of others didn't. And the fact that this is the first real super hero movie since the masterpiece that is The Dark Knight (fuck The Spirit) makes it seem even worse. The bar was raised very, very high, and Watchmen had no way of reaching… Continue

My Review of Slumdog Millionaire

I tip my hat to you Danny Boyle. You have made an amazing film, where everything works together and creates a masterpiece that is truly stunning. Everything works in this film, from the acting to the great cinematography. There is no doubt in my mind that this film will be remembered for a long time to come, and perhaps even considered a classic in the years to come.

Slumdog Millionaire focuses on a sixteen-year-old teenager living in… Continue

My Review of Four Christmases

By now, I honestly have to ask, why must every Christmas movie feature someone falling off a roof? Really, it's getting absurd by now. Or should I say, cliché? Because that's really all that this movie is, three big clichés and then a big old cliché ending.

Four Christmases stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as two lovers who have been together for three years, but have never gotten married because they're afraid they'll end up… Continue

What the fuck was up with Delgo?

Delgo is an animated movie that had started production about ten years ago, and featured the voice talents of Freddy Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, and a ton of other people too numerous to list here. It was released Decemeber 12, got critically panned, and flopped at the box office, making just less than a million dollars at the box office, and coming in at #16. But that's not the end of the story. The next week, it was completely gone from… Continue

My Review of Seven Pounds

The main problem with this movie is its script. There are some very slow dialogue scenes, and the explanation for what happened in the end is still not very clear, but much of the acting and even the music make up for that.

Seven Pounds, a title which I still don't get, focuses on Will Smith's character Ben Thomas, a tax collector working for the IRS, who seems to have a strange need to help others. The movie starts off with Smith… Continue

Wolverine Trailer

While the two really big movies coming out next summer are Harry Potter 6 and Transformers 2, people have started to get excited about the new Wolverine movie, especially with the release of this brand new epic trailer.

And I want this movie to do well. It's being released on May 1st, and if it is a good movie, then it'll be one hell of a start to the summer movie season. But I'm skeptical, and here's why. First of all, it's Fox, whose biggest hit this year… Continue

Movies that have made me cry (or at least tear up a little bit)

These aren't necessarily really sad movies, they just have parts of them that made me cry. And keep in mind that I cried at many when I was a kid, but not anymore. Just putting that one out there to avoid embarrassment on my behalf.

While obviously not the greatest movie of all time, and certainly not the best sequel either, this was still one of my favorite movies as a kid. And the ending always made me tear up, where the poodle that… Continue

Thank You House

I have to say that Korey's rants on Lakeview Terrace a while ago, while somewhat draining, made a very good point. Hollywood shouldn't try to force racism or interracial marriages upon us. If they do, it should feel natural and not make us feel like we're having a message shoved down our throats. Hollywood often avoids interracial marriage because they think that people will be too uncomfortable with it, and it will make their product less desirable.

I'd just like to give a quick… Continue

Golden Globe Nominations - My Thoughts and Predictions

The Golden Globe nominations have just recently been announced. I'm going to go over the major categories and give my thoughts, predictions, and overall responses. And I realize that it's Saturday, but I just couldn't get around to it earlier. Busy week.

Anyway, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, and Doubt got the most nominations, at five, and The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire, Revolutionary Road, and Vicky Cristina followed with four. As a warning, this post could be pretty long, but I've… Continue

Finally - it's Oscar Season!

Most of us were expecting the Oscar movies to start being cranked out shortly after Changeling came out. But Australia was a flop, and the big summer blockbusters like Wall-e and The Dark Knight have been getting all the buzz. But now, with the release of such movies as Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, and Frost/Nixon, the Oscar buzz has begun, and things have started picking up speed. There are not a whole lot of other big movies coming out that look like they've been pumped up specifically for the… Continue
